A leading Canadian mutual insurer is expanding its Ontario legal team and is seeking an In-House Counsel with strong insurance litigation experience to join its legal department. This is an excellent opportunity for an Ontario-call lawyer with 3–8 years of litigation experience who wants to move in-house while continuing to handle sophisticated casualty and accident benefits matters from start to finish.
Following Gore Mutual’s combination with Beneva and Unica Insurance, the organization is building a stronger and more diversified mutual insurance operation across Ontario and Western Canada. The legal team supports a broad range of insurance claims and litigation while working closely with claims professionals, clients, Team Leaders and senior Legal leadership.
The successful In-House Insurance Counsel will manage a significant portfolio of approximately 50+ casualty and accident benefits files, with file complexity aligned with experience. Counsel will have responsibility for matters throughout the litigation lifecycle, providing legal advice and developing strategies designed to achieve timely, commercially appropriate resolutions.
The role offers substantial hands-on litigation exposure, including:
Managing insurance defence and claims disputes from initial assignment through resolution
Conducting and preparing for examinations for discovery
Preparing for and attending private mediations and pre-trials
Handling contested motions and other litigation proceedings
Conducting arbitrations, trials and appeals
Providing settlement advice and negotiating resolutions
