The General Counsel oversees BC Hydro’s legal departments, Corporate Secretary’s office and the Freedom of Information Coordinating Office, and is responsible for the strategic legal affairs of the broader BC Hydro organization. The duties include: * Oversee a high performing team consisting of a director and approximately 40 managers, lawyers, professionals and support staff engaged in providing legal and strategic advice, solutions and direction across BC Hydro. * Advise and collaborate with the Board of Directors, the Executive Team, and senior leaders on complex corporate wide legal risks, strategies and exposures, including litigation, regulatory/legislative, corporate governance and policy matters of significant importance for BC Hydro and its subsidiaries. * Although not a member of BC Hydro’s Executive Team, the General Counsel will contribute to the formulation of policy and business solutions and participate in Executive Team meetings as required. * Collaborate across functional areas and engage employees and managers to develop innovative solutions and best practices that position BC Hydro to achieve its corporate vision, priorities and objectives. * Drive alignment across BC Hydro with the implementation of unified and effective processes across all functional areas, in particular, where BC Hydro is making significant investments in technology and business capabilities. * Effectively communicate legal, commercial and strategic risks and business solutions in practical and concise manner to a broad range of audiences, including the Board of Directors, the executive, senior leaders, subject matter experts as well as government, agencies and stakeholders. * Lead and foster engagement, collaboration and teamwork across the General Counsel’s office and with stakeholders. * Manage relationships with the law firms and external counsel who provide legal services to BC Hydro to ensure quality, timely and cost-effective advice that creates value for BC Hydro, our lawyers and our firms. * Manage complex relationships and risks arising from BC Hydro’s role as a Crown Corporation and regulated public utility. Qualifications: * Must be a member in good standing with the Law Society of British Columbia (or eligible for membership). * At least 15 years of experience as a practicing lawyer, preferably with managerial/leadership experience gained in an in-house corporate legal environment and exposure to complex corporate legal issues. * Experience in a regulated industry, preferably the energy industry (e.g. experience in electricity transmission and distribution matters, electricity purchase agreements, energy regulatory regimes such as the BC Utilities Commission or National Energy Board). * Proven leadership and relationship building skills including the ability to build consensus, engage a team, and to develop relationships with the executive, senior leaders, the Board of Directors, lawyers, law firms, and colleagues across BC Hydro as well as government and external stakeholders. * Excellent judgment when managing complex/strategic issues, especially under tight time pressures without precedents or guidelines. * Ability to champion and exercise a high level of creativity and innovation to address legal risk and help BC Hydro achieve its business objectives. * Exceptional oral and written communication, and presentation, skills, including the ability to effectively convey complex legal issues to diverse audiences. * Knowledge of the electricity and the legislation and regulations applicable to BC Hydro and the electricity industry would be an asset. * Experience working with a Crown Corporation or government and dealing with government agencies is an asset.
