Assistant General Counsel, Crypto & Fintech – Toronto

A leading global financial technology company is seeking an experienced Assistant General Counsel, Crypto & Fintech to join its growing legal and regulatory team in Toronto. This is an exceptional opportunity for a Canadian-qualified lawyer with 7+ years of experience in cryptocurrency, securities, financial services, fintech, derivatives, or related regulatory matters to take on a high-impact in-house legal role.

The successful candidate will work closely with product, compliance, business, and regulatory teams to support the development and launch of innovative financial products in Canada. This role is particularly well suited to a lawyer who combines strong technical legal knowledge with commercial judgment and enjoys working directly with business and product teams.

The Opportunity

As Assistant General Counsel, Crypto, you will provide strategic legal and regulatory advice on cryptocurrency products and services offered to Canadian customers. You will play a key role in evaluating new products, identifying regulatory requirements, managing legal risk, and helping the business bring innovative financial technology products to market.

This is a highly collaborative role for a lawyer who wants to move beyond traditional legal advisory work and become a strategic partner to product and compliance teams.

The position is based in Toronto, Ontario, with an expectation of working from the office at least three days per week.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide legal and regulatory advice relating to cryptocurrency, digital assets, securities, derivatives, financial services, and fintech products.

  • Advise product and compliance teams throughout the full product development and launch process.

  • Assess Canadian legal and regulatory requirements applicable to new and existing financial products.

  • Identify regulatory risks and develop practical solutions that allow the business to achieve its commercial objectives.

  • Monitor and advise on developments affecting the Canadian cryptocurrency and digital asset regulatory environment.

  • Work directly with Canadian securities regulators and applicable self-regulatory organizations on regulatory, compliance, and innovation matters.

  • Partner with internal business, compliance, risk, product, and technology teams on complex legal issues.

  • Coordinate with external counsel when specialized legal or regulatory advice is required.

  • Translate complex legal and regulatory issues into clear, practical advice for non-legal stakeholders.

  • Build strong relationships across the organization and help facilitate the successful launch of new products and features.

  • Take a proactive, commercially minded approach to legal work and act as a strategic business partner.

  • Support other corporate, regulatory, and product-related legal matters as required.

Qualifications

The ideal candidate will have:

  • A J.D. or equivalent Canadian law degree from a law school accredited by the Federation of Law Societies of Canada.

  • Membership in good standing with at least one Canadian provincial or territorial law society.

  • 7+ years of relevant legal experience gained at a leading law firm, government or regulatory agency, financial institution, brokerage, technology company, cryptocurrency company, or fintech business.

  • Experience advising on one or more of cryptocurrency, digital assets, securities, derivatives, financial services regulation, money transmission, sanctions, or related regulatory matters.

  • Strong understanding of Canadian securities and financial services regulation.

  • Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills.

  • The ability to explain sophisticated legal and regulatory issues clearly to business and product teams.

  • Strong commercial judgment and the ability to balance legal risk with business objectives.

  • A proactive, collaborative, and solutions-oriented approach.

  • The ability to operate effectively in a fast-moving technology and financial services environment.

Compensation

Toronto, Ontario

Base Salary: $144,500 – $170,000 CAD

The position is also eligible for bonus compensation, equity, and comprehensive benefits. Final compensation will depend on factors including experience, education, qualifications, location, business requirements, and market conditions.
