Job Summary
Reporting to the Senior Legal Counsel, the Law Clerk will be responsible for providing paralegal support to Senior Legal Counsel and Assistant Corporate Counsel with: (a) agreement preparation, document review and policy matters; and (b) litigation.

Acts as a filter for legal requests, prioritizing and directing them to the appropriate team members.
Serves as a point of contact for internal clients and service groups, providing legal information and support as needed.
Keeps up-to-date on relevant technical information.

Skills & Qualifications
Completion of a recognized Law Clerks accreditation program (e.g. ILCO).
Excellent working knowledge of Office365.
High level of accuracy and organizational skills.
Ability to research and apply provincial statutes and municipal by-laws relative to the activities of the position.
An equivalent combination of education and experience will be considered.
3 or more years’ experience in a municipal government environment, in-house or private practice with an emphasis on any or all of: (a) contract law; (b) administrative law; (c) social services law; (d) information technology law; (e) human resources law; (f) municipal law; (g) municipal policies; and/or (h) litigation.

ABOUT THE ROLE
Reporting to the Senior Counsel, Prosecutions, is responsible for conducting prosecutions under Federal and Provincial statutes and regulations and municipal by-laws in the Ontario Court of Justice.
WHAT YOU'LL BE DOING
Conducts prosecutions under Provincial statutes and regulations and Municipal by-laws in the Ontario Court of Justice.
Conducts prosecutions of Federal offences under the Contraventions Act (Canada).
Prepares prosecution cases by researching the relevant statutes, regulations, by-laws and case law, speaking to enforcement officers, witnesses, defense counsel and agents, and liaising with area municipalities and other enforcement agencies.
Reviews officer’s notes, witness statements, accident reports, and other documents and considers the admissibility of evidence to determine that all charges have been sufficiently investigated, all evidence collected, and that a reasonable prospect of conviction exists before presenting the case to the court.

WHAT WE'RE LOOKING FOR
Successful completion of secondary school diploma.
Minimum three (3) years' experience in prosecuting and/or defending municipal and/or provincial offences in the Ontario Court of Justice or successful completion of a Court and Tribunal Agent Program or Paralegal Program.
Must be licensed by the Law Society of Upper Canada to practice law or provide legal services as a Paralegal.
Satisfactory Police Criminal Background Check.

In addition, the Institute provides a number of educational resources to members of the judiciary, such as Judicial Education Guides, Electronic Bench Books, hard‐copy publications, educational modules to assist in program design, and an online judicial library. The NJI is looking to fill the permanent position of Counsel, Judicial Education. Generally, Counsel, Judicial Education play a significant role in curriculum and agenda development, faculty planning and development, materials development, and program delivery but do not serve as presenters or teachers at judicial education seminars. Domestic travel to judicial education programs is part of the position. On average, counsel travel to education programs about once per month, although on occasion Counsel might be required to travel for several weeks in sequence during the peak program delivery period. Counsel work with judicial education planning committees, court-based committees and NJI program delivery teams to produce judicial education seminars and educational materials at the national, regional, and provincial levels for judges across Canada. While most synchronous education seminars are provided in-person, some may be delivered online. Counsel, Judicial Education work closely with the In-Person Education and Evaluation management team and support the Chief Judicial Officer to provide a comprehensive curriculum of judicial education that integrates best practices in adult education design and delivery. This entails regular interaction with those responsible for education within courts in Canada and with other contributors to judicial education, including legal academics, members of the bar, and other subject-matter experts. The position allows considerable scope to engage in a wide range of projects relevant to the judiciary and that foster excellence in judicial education. Generally, Counsel, Judicial Education play a significant role in curriculum and agenda development, faculty planning and development, materials development, and program delivery but do not serve as presenters or teachers at judicial education seminars. Domestic travel to judicial education programs is part of the position. On average, counsel travel to education programs about once per month, although on occasion Counsel might be required to travel for several weeks in sequence during the peak program delivery period. There is little travel required during the months of July, August, and December. Specifically, the responsibilities of the position include: 1. Develop synchronous judicial education programs for delivery by the NJI and the courts, including preparing and conducting meetings and planning calls with judicial education planning committees and faculty members; 2. Work in collaboration with colleagues specializing in event planning to ensure cohesion between logistical planning processes and program content and delivery; 4. Working collaboratively with the Assistant Vice-President, Special Projects and Operational Performance (Legal Affairs), the candidate will be a key player in implementing the strategic priorities of Legal Affairs, supporting all of bank’s lines of business including commercial lending, venture capital (funds and direct investments), growth equity, subordinated debt and structured financing. The candidate will do so by providing legal advice on projects and initiatives, and by recommending, implementing and monitoring innovative tools and programs that increase efficiency, productivity, and work-product quality within Legal Affairs. The candidate will also act as a knowledge management champion for Legal Affairs and be a key contributor to process improvements, technology adoption, operational changes, and training. Assist in the development and implementation of the Legal Affairs’ Business Unit Plan and any related action plans.
