About the Role: Legal Counsel

We’re currently seeking a Legal Counsel to support a wide array of legal functions. This role reports directly to the Director, General Counsel and will play a hands-on part in advising various business units across Nissan Canada. Areas of responsibility include commercial transactions, regulatory matters, marketing law, litigation support, employment law, and financial services compliance.

Core Responsibilities:

  • Assist in overseeing legal matters related to class actions, employment disputes, vendor and supplier issues, franchise matters, and consumer claims.

  • Maintain corporate records, licenses, and ensure ongoing compliance with statutory obligations.

  • Provide counsel on consumer and corporate compliance, including document drafting, contract review, policy evaluation, and procedural guidance.

  • Support market representation staff on dealer network matters, including disputes, incentives, advertising, and financial arrangements.

  • Offer legal input on warranty programs, service campaigns, and customer goodwill initiatives, including regulatory communications and litigation strategy.

  • Advise on retail lending and leasing transactions, including documentation, enforcement actions, bankruptcies, and workout arrangements.

  • Review and manage sensitive, confidential information with potential reputational and financial implications for the organization.

  • Collaborate with and oversee external counsel on litigation and transactional work.

  • Support legal aspects of Nissan Canada Finance, both on retail and wholesale/commercial sides, and ensure compliance with consumer protection and credit legislation.

  • Provide corporate secretarial assistance to Nissan’s Canadian affiliates as needed.

  • Guide and contribute to litigation strategy, case assessment, legal research, and document management.

  • Advise the marketing and advertising departments on legal issues related to campaigns, privacy, and competition law.

  • Support procurement teams with contract negotiations and risk analysis.

  • Provide legal input on employment law, workplace compliance, and human rights matters.

  • Help ensure compliance within Nissan’s finance and leasing operations, and liaise with industry associations on related legal concerns.

Ideal Candidate Profile

  • Completed articling at a national or mid-to-large size law firm, with experience in:

    • Corporate/commercial law

    • Lending and finance (consumer and wholesale)

    • Marketing, advertising, and privacy

    • Competition law

    • Employment law

    • Commercial litigation management

  • Fluency in English is required; French bilingualism is a strong asset

  • Experience in automotive, retail, insurance, or warranty regulation is beneficial
