Provides legal advice and opinions on labour and employment matters at the University, including workplace accommodation, occupational health and safety, faculty hiring/ employment, employment contracts and collective agreement interpretation.
Researches, identifies, and provides updates on case law, legislative requirements and legal trends affecting the University, including, drafting memoranda for senior University leadership.
Participates in the development of precedents, workflow practices, and processes for routine matters and key legal operations.
Qualifications
Successful completion of a Bachelor of Laws (LL.B) or Juris Doctor (J.D) or equivalent law degree is required.
Minimum of three (3) years of experience practicing law in a law firm or in-house or government legal department setting, including at least two (2) years’ prior experience in administrative law, litigation or litigation management.
Prior experience in labour / employment law, human rights, insurance and privacy/access would be an asset.
Must be a member in good standing of the Law Society of Ontario
Strong ability and experience in drafting accurate, complete and persuasive legal documents such as pleadings, legal responses, memoranda and correspondence.
Knowledge of legislation relevant to the post-secondary education sector and broader public sector is preferred.
Exceptional analytical skills with strong attention to detail, judgment and decision making skills.
Solid organizational skills, including time management to manage multiple projects and competing priorities.

What You Will Do:

The Opportunity

Reporting to a Managing Director, Legal, the successful candidate will join a dynamic team of legal and compliance professionals who engage directly with senior leadership and business units to enable the business and help them navigate, understand, and comply with legal and regulatory requirements consistent with our Guiding Principles and our mandate to help ensure a stable retirement income for 21 million Canada Pension Plan contributors and beneficiaries.
Role-Specific Accountabilities
Provide advice and support in connection with the oversight and maintenance of CPP Investments’ corporate subsidiaries
Manage and respond to inbound ‘know your client’ or ‘KYC’ requests from global banking and transaction counterparties that require corporate and governance information about CPP Investments to comply with applicable regulatory requirements
Provide advice and support to cross-enterprise teams (including banking and treasury functions) associated with subsidiary compliance obligations and the maintenance of investment and operating registrations and licenses
Generally advise and assist on a broad range of enterprise matters, working with enterprise partners across the organization
Qualifications
LL.B./LL.M or JD required
Two to three years of relevant legal experience in a sophisticated corporate/commercial private practice at a major law firm or an in-house corporate legal department, including experience drafting and negotiating commercial agreements

High degree of comfort with technology and ability to leverage technological tools to identify and drive efficiencies

Job Description
As a Specialist, Legal & Business Affairs you will play a key role on the team. The ideal candidate will be a confident self-starter with advanced communication skills. Multi-tasking, prioritization, accuracy, and timeliness are key elements of the role. Trustworthiness and discretion, particularly concerning confidential information, are a must.
The Role
The Specialist, Legal & Business Affairs will:
Support the Vice-President and the Director of Legal & Business Affairs on routine legal and administrative matters within the Legal & Business Affairs Department
Prepare correspondence, legal documents, template legal agreements, internal communications and memoranda
Manage and maintain the legal "tickler" system with respect to contract expirations, renewal options, etc.
Manage and administer filing, distribution, and upload of legal documents to appropriate databases
Research and review current and historical records (digital and paper files) in response to various inquiries
Digitize and archive key documents from historical paper files
Coordinate corporate filings, extra-provincial corporate registrations, and related matters for Sony Music Entertainment Canada Inc. and associated entities internally and with outside counsel
Coordinate the approval process for incoming licensing requests internally and with artists and/or their representatives
Qualifications
College or University degree. Law-related studies and/or experience with legal documents and administration would be a definite asset
Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
Strong organizational skills and the ability to take the initiative, problem-solve, and multi-task.
Understanding and adherence to confidentiality and privacy concerns
Possess excellent writing, editing, and proofreading skills
Demonstrated knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint, Teams).
Ability to perform work with accuracy and attention to detail.
Ability to work in a fast-paced environment, meet deadlines, and be a self-starter.
