Description:

The Family Justice Centre (FJC) has evolved into an in-house family law clinic that delivers both summary legal advice and court form drafting services virtually through a suite of technologies managed by the Pro Bono Students Canada (PBSC) National Office located at the University of Toronto. PBSC National engages student caseworkers to staff this program, and those students work on client files with a roster of volunteer lawyers and the Supervising Lawyer, (FJC).

 


Under the direction of PBSC’s National Director, the Supervising Lawyer (FJC) holds diverse responsibilities within the FJC including, but not limited to, overseeing the intake of clients, overseeing the development of public legal education resources, answering students’ legal questions, developing legal policies for the program, providing training on substantive and procedural law to the students, managing the program’s partnerships and leading continued program development.

 


The incumbent is required to be an insured lawyer with the expertise and professional liability coverage to advise students on legal issues and communicate with clients directly, when required.

 


As a senior member of PBSC, the incumbent will also provide support to the National Director in the areas of stakeholder relations, strategic planning, fundraising, budgeting, along with other leadership functions.

 


QUALIFICATIONS

  • Undergraduate degree and law degree (LL.B / J.D. Degree); LL.M or a graduate degree in a related area of study is a strong asset
  • Must be able to practice Law in Ontario; membership in good standing with the Law Society of Ontario
  • Minimum 5 years’ experience practicing family law
  • Experience with training and/or supervising law students
  • Significant prior experience working with highly vulnerable communities; Training in anti-racism and anti-oppression practices; Experience working in social justice and/or a public interest setting, and engaging in community outreach activities
  • Prior supervisory and/or management experience is an asset
  • Demonstrated legal expertise related to the practice of family law
  • Superior communication skills, written and verbal
  • Excellent interpersonal skills
  • Exceptional analytical, organizational and time management skills; highly effective problem solving skills; sound reasoning and decision-making skills
  • Effective project management skills and good computer proficiency (i.e., Word, PowerPoint, and Outlook).
  • Ability to appreciate and balance PBSC’s dual mandate of client service and student education; familiarity with clinical legal education pedagogy and practice; ability to work under stress and meet deadlines; ability to manage conflicting priorities and deadlines; ability to handle sensitive and confidential matters with discretion; and demonstrated adaptability and creativity.
