Job Description

Manulife is looking for an experienced lawyer to join our Global Privacy Office as Senior Counsel, Privacy and Cybersecurity, Canada.


The Senior Counsel will work closely with and report to AVP & Chief Counsel, Privacy and Cybersecurity, Canada. This individual will have an opportunity to interact with numerous stakeholders across Manulife and the broader Global Privacy Office.



You will have a broad range of responsibilities, including the opportunity to provide legal support on a wide variety of issues relating to privacy, data and cybersecurity across Canada, including:

  • Collaborating and advising business partners and legal colleagues on complex privacy, data and cybersecurity issues
  • Partnering with Regulatory and Public Affairs colleagues and participating in industry consultations,
  • Acting as incident response counsel for security and privacy incidents, including outreach to third parties and service providers and advising on regulatory notification requirements
  • Reviewing, drafting and advising on contracts, data protection agreements and security schedules
  • Creating, developing and advising on templates, playbooks, scalable frameworks and processes
  • Serve as counsel to the Chief Privacy Officer, Canada and Privacy Centre of Excellence and provide support on privacy initiatives
  • Advising Human Resources on employment matters related to privacy, data and cybersecurity
  • Serve as counsel to segment and global cybersecurity teams, including cyber threat intelligence, cybersecurity operations and global information risk management
  • Keeping apprised of privacy, data protection and cybersecurity legislative changes and regulatory reform impacting Manulife’s Canadian business and operations
  • Participating in and support facilitating Manulife’s Privacy and Cyber Legal Network

  • You are experienced privacy and/or cybersecurity incident response counsel including providing advice on regulatory reporting requirements
  • You are a member in good standing with Law Society of Ontario or another province or territory of Canada with a minimum of 6 years post-call experience practicing law with significant expertise and ability to advise on privacy and cybersecurity matters.
