The Opportunity
Our Litigation team in Canada is looking to add a junior lawyer to the team. Reporting to the Director, Litigation & Employment Law, this professional will support the team in both conducting and managing litigation and arbitration matters involving TC Energy and its subsidiaries. What you’ll do
This Legal Counsel will support the full cycle of the litigation or arbitration process, starting with initial file assessment and fact gathering, through the pleadings, discovery, trial and/or settlement phases. Specific tasks include:
Conducting initial file assessment and review, including interviewing witnesses and fact- gathering
Conducting legal research and preparing research memorandums
Assisting with document identification, collection, review and production

Minimum Qualifications
2-4 years’ experience in litigation

REQUIREMENTS:
Bachelor of Laws (LL.B) or Juris Doctor (JD).
Member in good standing with an entity of the Federation of Law Societies of Canada (e.g. Law Society of Ontario).
Three (3) or more years professional experience in commercial law in one or more the following areas: procurement, information technology, and construction.
Experience in a regulated environment is considered an asset.
Knowledge of corporate and commercial law.
Knowledge of legislation and common law impacting the organization.
Well-developed project and time management skills.
Proven judgment, analytical and problem-solving and decision-making skills; able to distill legal information and frame for legal and business user consumption.

Responsible for independently providing day-to-day commercial legal advice, consultation, research and guidance to internal stakeholders and business teams in the areas of commercial, procurement, and Information Technology law and compliance. They act as the initial department contact for the assigned client groups and prepares legal responses, documentation and assistance in the drafting and execution of all legal documents. In collaboration with internal stakeholders, the incumbent leads contract development and negotiations on behalf of the organization in a quality, cost-effective and timely manner. The incumbent conducts detailed legal research and supports policy development for commercial legal services. They also routinely collaborate with the organization’s regulatory and litigation groups in advising internal clients, as well as with the real property and commercial arms of the Business Law Services teams. They will also work with external counsel in connection with commercial files.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
Legal Analysis and Advice: Works collaboratively with assigned client groups and internal stakeholders to provide day-to-day accurate commercial legal advice fostering internal client relationships to develop an understanding of organizational needs and mitigate corporate risk in the contracting of commercial terms and conditions on behalf of the corporation and its affiliates. Delivers practical and accurate legal opinions, interpretations, and advice on legal matters that involves interpreting facts, precedents, and evaluating situations in compliance with policies as well as all applicable laws and statutes.
Commercial Contract Management: Drafts, reviews and negotiates commercial agreements/arrangements with external vendors/parties and provides consultation to achieve timely, quality, cost-effective performance (e.g. new commercial contract terms and conditions, operational and third-party agreements including offers to connect, third-party attachments, building metering, requests for proposals or quotation in the procurement context, master services agreements, sales/disposal of assets, review of existing contract terms and conditions, amendments, general legal documentation review, professional services agreements, etc.).
