Law Branch members are involved in all aspects of regulating energy resource activity from cradle to grave in the province. The work is varied, stimulating, and rewarding. Your Key Responsibilities:
Provide legal advice to AER personnel in all branches and offices, including hearing commissioners and delegated decision makers, on all facets of the AER’s business and regulatory functions, in particular the processing of regulatory appeals, applications and related statements of concern and providing legal support on closure, compliance and enforcement matters.
Provide legal analysis, interpretation, advice and opinions regarding AER administered legislation and legislation (including FOIP legislation, insolvency legislation and related jurisprudence) to which the AER is subject, rules and regulatory instruments, policy development through membership on applicable internal committees.
Participate in AER hearings and ADR and prepares court pleadings and submissions and briefs and represents the AER in the Court of Appeal of Alberta and other courts and tribunals (e.g., Human Rights Commission, Alberta Ombudsman, etc.).
Member in good standing of The Law Society of Alberta.
Seven to ten years providing legal services in at least two of the following areas: administrative/regulatory law, litigation and/or energy/environmental law.
Superior legal research skills.
Strong attention to detail with high importance placed on accuracy and high calibre work products.
Superior writing skills.
Collaborative team player.
Experience working in-house in a public/regulatory body or quasi-judicial board or agency is considered an asset.

This is a 12 month, Full Time- Limited Term contract with high potential for extension.

Flexible work hours, while committing to being available during our core hours of 9:00am – 3:00pm.
If you choose to participate in the hybrid model, you will:
Be provided with an AER computer or laptop when working in the office.
Need to have access to a personal computer when working from home (unless assigned an AER laptop - dependent on business need).
Have a high-speed internet connection with a minimum of 50 Mbps for downloads and 30 Mbps for uploads when working remotely.
