Job Description This role is accountable to the AGC Downstream Canada, and carries responsibilities in three primary areas, providing timely, cost effective and practical legal advice and support to: (1) real estate professionals, business managers, environmental specialists and claims professionals; (2) the Retail business in Canada; and (3) the Global Commercial business in Canada. In each of these areas, the role is responsible for: Protecting Shell's interests and enhancing Shell's reputation and brand by providing sound legal advice, assisting with negotiations and drafting legal agreements; Direct handling of transactional real estate matters, including drafting and negotiating lease agreements and carrying matters from purchase and sale agreement negotiation to closing and registration of title; Advising on and drafting of a wide variety of commercial contracts, where necessary with direct involvement in contract negotiations; Oversee work product of paralegals and legal assistants and provide direction, training and feedback; Dealing with client groups and properties in multiple jurisdictions; Providing advice and counsel to the business with respect to contentious issues and disputes, and co-operating with the Litigation Department regarding litigation matters; Providing support to energy transition matters and related innovative projects; Interfacing and co-operating with lawyers from other Shell Legal departments and occasionally retaining, instructing and managing external counsel; Advising on various matters related to Loyalty and Marketing; Meeting tight deadlines with limited resources; Providing support and advice on other commercial matters that may come up from time to time; and Balancing conflicting priorities. This position requires an energetic and motivated individual who enjoys working within a team. The successful candidate should have the ability to simultaneously balance multiple tasks and work in various fields of law. The position requires a commercial mindset, a pragmatic approach and strong communication and interpersonal skills to provide hands-on legal support to a variety of businesses and to people at all levels, including senior management. The successful candidate must have excellent problem-solving, analytical and negotiation skills. Requirements Legal right to work in Canada without sponsorship. Must be a member of the Law Society of Alberta or eligible for admission, with a minimum of 3 years relevant experience. Work experience and demonstrated expertise in transactional commercial real estate, including leasing and the handling of environmentally impacted properties. Experience negotiating and drafting high-quality commercial agreements. Excellent verbal and written communication and proven drafting skills.
