Reporting to the Vice President Legal, the Senior Legal Counsel, Employment and Labour Law will be responsible for HR legal issues supporting the governance of the employer-employee relationships within the organization.
This role is accountable for upholding and protecting the obligations of the organization under appropriate legislation, rules, and regulations along with ensuring the organization is complying with the laws related to the formation, full lifecycle, and cessation of employment relationships.
This is a 16 month contract role, based our of our Calgary Head office.
Key Responsibilities:
Provide legal advice to Trans Mountain Leadership on employment and labour law matters including, discipline and termination of employment, constructive and wrongful dismissal, as well as conflict-related to harassment, bullying, violence, sexual harassment, and discrimination
Advise in formulating, drafting, editing, and implementing labour & employment-related company strategies, policies, and procedures to mitigate risk to Trans Mountain
Draft and/or manage preparation for external resources for claims, contracts, or other legal documents to support Trans Mountains' legal proceedings as well as employment and labour-related legal briefs and legal opinions
Conduct legal research to develop an understanding of precedents and how past outcomes can be leveraged to support Trans Mountain
Interpret, advise and proactively communicate/update Trans Mountain on employment and labour-related laws, rulings, regulations & general compliance, outlining the implications to Trans Mountain
Qualifications and Professional Experience:
A Bachelor’s Degree in Law (L.LB) or Jurist Doctor (J.D.) from an accredited law school
Membership in the Canadian Bar Association.
Registered member in good standing of the Law Society of Alberta (LSA).

The Legal Assistant will be responsible for providing a broad range of coordination and administrative support services including: opening, organization and prioritization of files; facilitation of communications with other related University faculties and units, as well as other parties; editing, and/or formatting of various types of agreements and other related duties, as required.
The Legal Assistant must be amenable to varying work arrangements relating to the University’s approach to remote work environments and its response to public health and safety matters.
The qualifications and experience we’re looking for:
- Successful completion of a legal secretarial program of studies required.
- Minimum of two (2) years of legal office experience required, five (5) years of experience preferred.
- General understanding of the University, its structure, and its activities an asset.
- An understanding of the University's policies and procedures an asset.
- An acceptable equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
- Strong and accurate keyboarding skills required.
- Strong skills with Microsoft Office products required.
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills, both verbal and written required.
- A sharp attention to detail required.
- Strong organizational skills required.
- Strong prioritization skills required.
- Project management skills required.
- Event management skills required.
- Good skills with a variety of office equipment required.
- Strong general office skills required.
- Ability to work in a highly confidential environment required.
- Ability to exercise good independent judgment and action required.
- Ability to present a professional image, and display tact and diplomacy in all dealings required.
- Ability to present a strong customer service focus; required.
- Ability to adapt to and learn new systems and technologies required.
- Ability to adapt to changing work and priorities required.
- Ability to work under pressure required.
-Ability to adjust and work efficiently in differing work environments - either from home or on University campus, based on direction by University leadership.
- Satisfactory work record, including satisfactory attendance and punctuality, is required
