POSITION OVERVIEW

POSITION OVERVIEW
Working collaboratively with the Assistant Vice-President, Special Projects and Operational Performance (Legal Affairs), the candidate will be a key player in implementing the strategic priorities of Legal Affairs, supporting all of bank’s lines of business including commercial lending, venture capital (funds and direct investments), growth equity, subordinated debt and structured financing. The candidate will do so by providing legal advice on projects and initiatives, and by recommending, implementing and monitoring innovative tools and programs that increase efficiency, productivity, and work-product quality within Legal Affairs. The candidate will also act as a knowledge management champion for Legal Affairs and be a key contributor to process improvements, technology adoption, operational changes, and training. Legal Affairs
Assist in the development and implementation of the Legal Affairs’ Business Unit Plan and any related action plans.
Assist in designing, implementing, and maintaining a project management platform for Legal Affairs to track, prioritize and manage projects that require legal support.

WHAT WE ARE LOOKING FOR
Bachelor’s Degree in Law and/or Juris Doctorate
Member of a Canadian provincial bar or law society
Minimum of 4 years of relevant experience, including banking or financial services law.

Implement and coordinate corporate awareness activities related to ATIP.
Contribute to furthering the status of the ATIP office as an effective and valued business partner within PSP.
Review, draft and negotiate data protection addendums, data transfer agreements and privacy and security contractual terms for suppliers, on an as needed basis.
Provide advice and recommendations on privacy requirements for projects involving personal information on an as-needed basis.
Perform Privacy Impact Assessments, as required by the Privacy Act (Canada), the GDPR and other privacy laws, on an as-needed basis.
WHAT YOU’LL NEED
Education
Called to the bar in at least one Province in Canada (ideally)
IAPP or other privacy professional certification will be considered an asset
Experience
Minimum of 7+ years related experience within Access to Information, preferably in a government institution
Privacy experience is considered an asset. (an interest in privacy and training will be mandatory for those without experience).
Skills
Trusted subject-matter expert in ATIP
Deep knowledge of Canadian ATIP laws
Expertise in international privacy laws impacting PSP’s operations, including the General Data Protection Regulation, is considered an asset

The Opportunity
Reporting to the VP & Chief Counsel, Corporate Law, this role of Senior Counsel, Global Corporate Legal Affairs will support a broad range of legal matters related to Manulife’s financial, timely ,and ESG-related public disclosure, as well as support Manulife’s proprietary investment, acquisition and divestiture activity.
