Legal Services Branch (LSB) is the Government of Manitoba’s full service in-house civil law office of about 55 lawyers. It provides a complete range of high quality legal services to all government departments, and to agencies, boards, commissions and corporations that do not have their own legal counsel. LSB’s work enables the Minister of Justice and Attorney General of Manitoba to fulfill the constitutional and statutory responsibility of Chief Legal Advisor to Government, and as the guardian of the public interest with respect to matters of civil law. This results in a varied work experience that is unique, challenging, and highly engaging. LSB is currently seeking two (2) lawyers of varying experience and skill sets to join our team in a distinct area of LSB, its Aboriginal and Natural Resources Law Section. Lawyers with experience and interest in various practice areas, including one or more of Aboriginal Law, Indigenous laws, constitutional law, child welfare law, contract negotiation, commercial law and drafting, privacy law, conflict of laws, environment law, resource law and public law, are sought to join an expanding practice group supporting this important transition.

Qualifications: Essential:
Bachelor of Laws (LL.B.) or Juris Doctor (J.D) degree with experience practising law in a common law jurisdiction
Experience or exposure to any one or more of: Aboriginal Law; Indigenous laws; constitutional law; child welfare law; contract negotiation; commercial law and drafting; privacy law; conflict of laws; law related to natural resources and/or Crown lands; public law
Experience interpreting and explaining statutes, regulations and/or policies

Provide general legal advice and assistance to assigned departments across the Government of Manitoba on Aboriginal law and regulatory law matters This includes advice related to the Crown’s duty to consult Indigenous peoples; section 35 of the Constitution Act, 1982; Treaty Land Entitlement; Self-Governance; Child Welfare; and matters concerning the protection, use and development of Manitoba’s natural resources and Crown lands. The work could include legislative development.

JOB SUMMARY

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

Minimum of 2 years of broad legal experience in the practice of municipal law, as outlined in the Job Summary, which may include experience before civil courts, administrative boards and tribunals, or specific experience directly related to the assigned area of practice.

The Role This legal function is key to Nitro’s current growth strategy. Advise the product team in how to develop compliant functions and features within the products we offer;

Required Skills, Experience and Qualifications:
Degree in law (LLB / JD) and called to the bar in Ontario or a member in good standing of a recognized law society / bar association in Canada with the ability to work as in-house counsel in Ontario.
5-10 years legal experience, including a mix of private practice and in-house experience.

Intellectual Property: Manage the COC’s intellectual property portfolio including: performing routine auditing of portfolio and liaising with internal stakeholders regarding IP and trademark needs, managing 3rd party trademark monitoring services and reviewing weekly reports, performing initial screenings/searches to assess the availability of new marks for use and consulting with and directing external counsel to support registration of new marks and opposition of third-party registrations, where necessary.
Licensing: Provide support for all aspects of licensing COC marks/IP including contract drafting, contract interpretation and issues management.
Brand Protection: Collaborate with Commercial Affairs team to review Brand Protection Framework and ensure it meets all legal parameters, including plans for dealing with infringements. Provide legal support on infringements including providing legal analysis, proposed solutions, supporting overall strategy, reviewing and drafting communication as necessary.
Legal Support for Games: Provide support to Marketing, Marketing Partnerships and Commercial Affairs teams in relation to Games activities.
Data Privacy: Provide support for COC activities in compliance with data privacy laws and regulations and support the implementation of best practices related to the collection, use and disclosure of data, including policy development and interpretation.
Contracts and Agreements: Assist in the creation and review of COC contracts including but not limited to Marketing and other goods and services contracts and agreements, athlete agreements, creative services agreements, image waivers and releases.
Governance: Provide support to the General Counsel and Corporate Secretary in connection with the COC Board/Session and COC Committees and the Canadian Olympic Foundation.

Knix is on the hunt for an Associate General Counsel to join our growing team. We’re looking for an experienced attorney who will serve as Associate General Counsel and oversee the legal and compliance functions. As the Associate General Counsel, you will be responsible for managing legal risk across the organization including building and managing relationships with (i) internal cross-functional teams; (ii) our parent organization, Essity AB; and (iii) external legal firms. Knix is on the hunt for an Associate General Counsel to join our growing team. We’re looking for an experienced attorney who will serve as Associate General Counsel and oversee the legal and compliance functions. As the Associate General Counsel, you will be responsible for managing legal risk across the organization including building and managing relationships with (i) internal cross-functional teams; (ii) our parent organization, Essity AB; and (iii) external legal firms. This is a Generalist role that requires the candidate to work across multiple legal topics. The Opportunity
Act as a strategic partner and advisor to the Knix leadership team. Lead legal projects and drive legal and compliance initiatives.
Provide proactive planning and strategic advice to the business on regulatory issues impacting the business.
Support management decisions with robust risk assessments and ensure senior management is aware of legal trends and developments as well as risk exposure.
Provide advice and guidance on corporate governance matters.
Develop internal guidelines, policies and procedures for managing legal and compliance risks.
Manage various types of litigation that may arise with the assistance of external counsel.
Coordinate external legal counsel reviews as required.
Oversee contract negotiations and renewals.
Provide training and education to the Knix team on legal, regulatory, and compliance issues impacting the business.

Qualifications
Minimum of 6-10 years direct experience in the legal practice of commercial, marketing, or consumer products law, with increasing responsibility and team management.
