Job Description:

This is a unique and exciting opportunity for a lawyer with business acumen and a relentless focus on the client experience.  The successful candidate will join a dynamic legal team supporting Sun Life Canada’s investment and mutual fund dealer businesses.  

This role may be based in Toronto or Waterloo under a hybrid work policy, allowing employees the flexibility to work both remotely and in-office.

What will you do?

The successful candidate will be resilient, adaptable, highly motivated and self-confident. They will be required to provide proactive, timely and strategic legal support to senior business leaders and their teams relating to Securities and Regulatory matters, as well as related support areas such as Operations, Risk, Compliance and IT on a broad range of matters associated with mutual fund and individual securities distribution along with insurance-based wealth products and solutions.  This role will also involve advising on applicable laws, regulatory reviews and inquiries, policies and procedures, client and estate inquiries, reviewing product and marketing materials, and drafting/negotiating agreements. The successful candidate will also participate in Sun Life’s advocacy initiatives on legal and regulatory developments and changes.

What do you need to succeed?

The successful candidates will be:

• A member in good standing with a provincial law society in Canada, preferably the Law Society of Ontario with relevant experience at a law firm or in-house legal team.
• Experience in supporting mutual fund and investment dealer businesses.  
• Extensive knowledge and experience with applicable securities rules and regulations and Canadian Investment Regulatory Organization related matters.
• Enthusiastic about leveraging data and technology to provide legal solutions to our business partners and inform business strategy.
• Able to engage and influence others with confidence.
• Familiar with relevant industry and regulatory trends.
• Able to distill complex problems and apply analytical and creative thinking to provide innovative solutions and manage risk.
• Skilled at simplifying complex legal concepts and writing and speaking clearly.
• Able to take a risk-based approach to the prioritization of work.
• Able to build relationships across multiple areas of the business.

The Base Pay range is for the primary location for which the job is posted.  It may vary depending on the work location of the successful candidate or other factors.  In addition to Base Pay, eligible Sun Life employees participate in various incentive plans, payment under which is discretionary and subject to individual and company performance.  Certain sales focused roles have sales incentive plans based on individual or group sales results.
