Job Description

The opportunity

Reporting to the Deputy Chief Legal Officer, the Global General Counsel, Enterprise Legal Services will have direct global oversight for strategy and global execution of the Pension Law and Policy, Commercial Law, Employment, Labour, Immigration Law, Privacy Law and Litigation practice areas (the “Practice Areas”).

Who You'll Work With

You will manage a high performing team of legal specialists across the Practice Areas, work closely with internal and external global partners and act as an effective liaison between members of the Executive Team, board members and senior management.

What You'll Do

Strategic Legal advisor

  • Provides strategic, high quality and business oriented legal counsel to the organization globally across the Practice Areas, including but not limited to helping to drive compliance with relevant laws and regulations, provide advice on legal risks related to the Practice Areas and support Teachers’ culture of workplace fairness and equity.
  • Oversees the efficient and effective delivery of legal services globally across all applicable Practice Areas, including overseeing budgeting and execution of legal initiatives and projects supporting those areas.
  • Advises and presents to the Executive Team, Senior Management and the Board on legal and reputational risks and trends in the Practice Areas, including mitigation strategies.
  • Provides enterprise legal and regulatory support through partnership and collaboration with key clients and stakeholders, including others in Legal, Government & Public Affairs, Compliance, Risk and business partners, for the purpose of influencing decisions and managing risks to achieve strategic goals.
  • Collaborates with other members of the Corporate Affairs team with respect to monitoring and developing submissions regarding legislative, regulatory and jurisprudential issues impacting the Practice Areas and the business, including acting as a key liaison on behalf of Ontario Teachers’ with applicable regulatory bodies.

Oversight and Partnership with external counsel

  • Working with the Practice Area leads, oversees and manages external counsel relationships and engagement across the Practice Areas, ultimately responsible for the content, quality and cost effectiveness of external counsel’s advice.
  • Management accountability

Develop & Lead an Effective Team

  • Drives and obtains buy in to strategy across the Practice Areas and supports team’s effective execution against strategy.
  • Delegates effectively to team of legal specialists and provides clear and appropriate guidance in identifying critical problems to which the application of legal principles will yield the greatest opportunities and minimize risks.
  • Implements talent strategy for their team, with a view to global delivery of enterprise legal services, including identifying, coaching, and promoting the right talent.
  • Empowers their team to take ownership in their area of expertise and hold them accountable to the strategy, drive discipline, actively challenging and ensuring meaningful progress.
  • Focuses on driving engagement and building a strong culture to keep culture and team intact.
  • Fosters the generation of unique ideas in others.
  • Brings an understanding of how to assess and change culture within the department to optimize results and align to values.
  • Provides advice and counsel on complex litigation matters globally as well as counsel on sensitive matters impacting the Practice Areas.
  • Working with the Practice Area leads, retains and instructs outside counsel, setting priorities amongst demands for legal input and in coordinating and directing work of outside counsel.
  • Influences and applies strategies on operational issues facing the department and the Board.
  • Timing or judgment errors could result in a significant harm to corporate reputation as well as great financial benefit or loss to the Fund and impact on the reputation of Ontario Teachers’.

What You'll Need

  • Bachelor of Laws/Juris Doctorate/Bachelor of Civil Laws, call to the Bar of a Canadian, US or UK jurisdiction
  • Member in good standing with applicable provincial/territorial Law Society
  • Engaging, transparent and motivational team leader and player with the ability to delegate effectively while maintaining accountability.
  • Proven ability to act with integrity and in an ethical manner with a focus on preserving reputation and demonstrated commitment to Teachers’ values.
  • Proven experience collaborating, building and maintaining strong cross-functional relationships and promoting collaboration within and across teams.
  • Proficient in negotiating, influencing, making recommendations and facilitating decisions among all levels within the organization.
  • Outstanding communication and presentation skills, excellent interpersonal and client service orientation
  • Excellent time management, analytical, decision making, and problem-solving skills with the ability to think in terms of the big picture, strategically and creatively, identify trends, anticipate legal issues and make sound legal judgments.
  • Ability to thrive in a high growth, fast paced environment, to prioritize effectively, engage and raise issues appropriately within the organization.
  • Broad knowledge of applicable legal and regulatory environment across Practice Areas, with specialize expertise in litigation, including understanding of emerging regulatory issues and market developments.
  • 15+ years of experience practicing law in house at a leading company or at a top tier law firm which should include acting as a strong strategic partner to business teams and strong litigation experience.
  • 5-10 years of previous experience in a supervisory and team building role.
  • Experience in the financial services industry with pension sector experience a plus
