The Legal Counsel is responsible for the provision of sound legal advice and counsel to stakeholders across Sheridan at the direction of their supervisor. From a legal services perspective, the incumbent acts as a resource to various faculties and departments within Sheridan on a wide range of matters and projects in support of Sheridan's strategic and operational goals and objectives, and in an effort to minimize/manage risk. The Legal Counsel identifies, assesses and mitigates legal risks, drafts and negotiates legal documents, and provides advice regarding general business, academic processes and decisions related to student conduct and disciplinary measures, privacy and freedom of information, records issues, governance issues, litigation management, research and development, and other topics as business needs warrant as determined by the General Counsel and Corporate Secretary. From a policy development perspective, the incumbent may assist in providing advice and input with implementing Sheridan policies and processes that align with Sheridan's strategic and operational objectives. This position also holds responsibility for assisting with Sheridan's Freedom of Information (FOI) and Privacy compliance. The Legal Counsel also assists with supervision of articling and summer students.
What You’ll be Doing
Drafting, reviewing, updating and negotiating legal documents on behalf of Sheridan, which may include preparation and communication of legal implications, opinions and conducting educational session to aid the understanding of legal advice/recommendations and to foster organizational trust/accountability;
Providing legal advice and counsel to Sheridan stakeholders on day-to-day operational issues by identifying and assessing legal risks, interpreting legislation, and reviewing and supporting development of business best practices, planning and processes;
Conducting research into legal issues to maintain technical expertise of changes to legislation and case law in order to understand current and future needs of the College and anticipate legal support required
Providing education, training and mentoring on legal topics or legislative activities to Sheridan management to ensure stakeholders are in compliance with various legal requirement;
Contributing to legal research, development, drafting, implementing, reviewing and updating of Sheridan Policies;
Performing other duties as assigned (i.e., assisting with other legal duties, Freedom of Information (FOI) and privacy matters).

The successful candidate will also meet the following qualifications:
4-year bachelor’s degree, along with a law degree from a recognized university
3 years experience providing legal support for large projects (equivalency will be considered)
Membership in the Law Society of Ontario, in good standing
Sound knowledge in Ontario Colleges of Applied Arts and Technology Act, Ontario Trustees Act, Contract Law (preferred)
Knowledge and experience with the Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act, 2000
Comprehensive understanding of the College system (preferred)
Comprehensive understanding of the college regulatory environment, including applicable legislation, regulations, and directives (preferred)
