Job Description

We are hiring for the position of Legal Assistant Intern / Co-Op to provide a range of operational and analytical support and perform transactions and other processing activities. This role will not only provide you introductory experience in a professional setting, you will also be equipped with skills and experiences that contribute to the completion of your studies and prepare you to build a career in your chosen discipline.

Reporting to the Legal Office Supervisor/Senior Manager of Legal Support, assists the Lawyers handling
P & C Insurance Legal Matters, representing TD Insurance or its Policyholders in civil litigation and no fault/accident benefits matters involving claims for monetary damages or compensation for personal injury or property damage.

In this role, you will:

  • Prepare and proofread correspondence and legal documents, such as correspondence, factums, motions, summonses, etc.
  • Drafts standard legal documents, correspondence, and pleadings for review by Lawyer(s). Edits grammar, punctuation, and spelling as needed.
  • Manage Lawyer's calendar i.e, schedule appointments, coordinate appearances, and resolve scheduling conflicts.
  • Answers a wide variety of telephone inquiries based on knowledge of case.
  • Manage, organize, and maintain documents in paper or electronic filing systems
  • Performs additional duties as requested such as:
  • Arranges medical exams
  • Reception relief
  • Maintains lists of witnesses, subpoenas, fees, etc.
  • Requests fees for payment from Claims department
  • Participates in arranging lawyer's files for easy access during trials
  • Informs witnesses of scheduled court appearances
  • And other miscellaneous duties as man be assigned from time to time

Job Requirements

  • Current enrollment in a relevant post-secondary program
  • Proficient with MS Office Suite and internet applications
  • Detail-oriented and highly organized
  • Ability to proof and edit legal documents
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills and professional demeanor
  • Strong interpersonal and client service skills, professional and positive demeanour
  • Ability to work independently, multi-task, and meet proscribed deadlines
