Department Overview
TMX Group’s Office of the General Counsel (GCO) is a high-performing legal team with offices in Toronto, Montreal, Calgary, Vancouver and London (U.K.) and is responsible for providing TMX Group and its subsidiaries with the full suite of legal services they need to support and develop their businesses, including with respect to corporate, securities, governance, regulatory, commercial and intellectual property law.
Description of Role
Provide legal and regulatory support to equity trading, fixed income, and capital formation, among other TMX businesses
Act as legal adviser for new initiatives led by our exchange trading and data businesses
Assist with drafting changes to trading rules for our various exchanges
Oversee all aspects of the filing and regulatory approval process for changes to trading and data rules, fee changes and new product offerings
Partner with the business to achieve the desired regulatory outcomes
Nurture strong working relationships with the staff of key regulators
Advise Vice President, Regulatory Affairs and other leaders on new and changing regulatory requirements
Monitor securities industry and related proposed legal and policy developments in Canada and other jurisdictions
Draft responses to requests for comment on proposals that may affect TMX Group businesses, with input from the relevant stakeholders
Requirements
Member of law society in any province of Canada in good standing
4-8 years legal experience in corporate, commercial and/or securities, or equivalent experience, with a reputable company or top tier law firm
Knowledge of trading and/or clearing and settlement operations is an asset
Strong advocacy skills, and the ability to succinctly explain complex matters to audiences with varying degrees of background information
Understands how to work effectively within a broader enterprise with overarching priorities
Contributes to a culture of high performance, accountability and inclusivity
Strong attention to detail, but also the ability to remain focused on the big picture
Recognizes the importance of understanding client needs and giving intelligent, thoughtful and practical advice
Self-starter but also team-oriented
Excellent analytical and interpersonal skills
Result-oriented and commercially astute
