Job Description

POSITION SUMMARY : We are seeking an experienced attorney to join the Reinsurance Legal Team within the AIG Re group of companies at AIG, which includes Validus Re, Validus Research, AlphaCat Managers and the Talbot assumed treaty reinsurance group. The team is comprised of attorneys and other professionals providing high quality advisory, transactional, regulatory, compliance, governance, contract and claims coverage support across AIG Re on matters globally. This role will support projects that are time-sensitive, highly visible inside and outside of the company, and key to AIG Re’s strategic initiatives. This position reports to the General Counsel of AIG Re & Reinsurance.

 

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Working closely with AIG Re’s underwriters globally on their reinsurance treaty wordings across all property and casualty business lines. This work includes: developing an engagement model for when Underwriters need to involve Legal; tracking and ensuring compliance with that model; managing and negotiating the legal aspects of the reinsurance treaty programs; developing and enforcing best practices for reinsurance treaty wordings to achieve consistency in the wordings to the full extent possible and best protect AIG Re’s interests; developing or enhancing standard reinsurance treaty clauses and fallback positions, as appropriate; and providing training to Underwriters and relevant other personnel on reinsurance treaty wording-related issues.

  • Drafting and negotiating ancillary documents relating to the reinsurance treaties.

  • Addressing legal, regulatory and compliance issues of all types relating to the reinsurance treaties.

  • Advising Claims and relevant other personnel on coverage issues that may arise under the reinsurance treaty programs.

  • Managing outside counsel, contract wording consultants or other vendors, as needed, who support AIG Re in preparing reinsurance treaty wordings or on reinsurance coverage issues.

 

REQUIRED SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE:

 

  • Juris Doctor required; Bar admission in the U.S. (NY preferred), Bermuda or England.

  • Minimum of 6 years of legal experience at a law firm and/or acting as in-house counsel.

  • Experience with drafting reinsurance contracts.

  • Experience with analyzing coverage issues under reinsurance contracts.

  • Demonstrated experience advising senior business partners/clients on complex reinsurance matters within aggressive timeframes.

  • Ability to manage multiple projects and assignments in a fast paced environment.

  • Experience in the (re)insurance industry is required.

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills; i.e. , a thorough command of the English language including excellent spelling, grammar and punctuation.

  • Ability to deal effectively and courteously with clients and colleagues and to exercise discretion and confidentiality in all matters.

  • Must be able to work outside of normal office hours including evenings, weekends and public holidays, if necessary.

  • Ability to work collaboratively with peers and internal clients across a global organization as well as independently.
