Position Overview
Number of Positions: 1
Language: Bilingualism in English and French is an asset.
Additional Information: A Senior Counsel, Litigation will be considered depending on the knowledge and experience of the candidate. The work location for this role is flexible to Ontario or Saskatchewan.
As Counsel for the Litigation team, you will be responsible for a case load consisting primarily of the defense of life and disability claims or coverage matters nation- wide. You will conduct research, prepare legal opinions, and provide advice with respect to employment law matters, including representation of The Co-operators group of companies in legal proceedings before the Courts and other administrative tribunals.
What you’re responsible for:
Developing the litigation strategy including pleadings, motions, discoveries, mediations, and pre-trials and providing advice to internal clients as to whether a case should be tried or settled.
Working effectively with internal clients and other members of the litigation team to achieve consistency in the conduct of litigation across the country and reach “defensible resolutions” in a manner that is both cost effective and proportionate to the level of risk posed to the company in any given case.

The work of the branch includes providing legal advice to various ministries and agencies within government; representing the government before administrative tribunals, trade panels, and at all levels of court including the Supreme Court of Canada; providing legal assistance in negotiations on a broad range of topics; and providing training to government officials and others with respect to these matters.
In this position, the successful candidate will be responsible for:
Litigation support duties including the independent preparation of court documents such as Acknowledgements of Service, Statements as to Documents and Books of Authorities and correspondence to other lawyers;
Maintaining the branch filing system, both paper and electronic, in accordance with government policies and procedures such as ARMS and ORS;
Receiving and reviewing invoices, arranging for payment, credit card reconciliations, and preparing monthly expenditure statements all in accordance with government policies and procedures such as MIDAS.
Arranging meetings, conferences, and making travel arrangements for lawyers;
Maintaining the branch library including ordering textbooks, updating loose-leaf texts, and updating a number of binders of case law and academic articles that are kept by the branch;
General office duties such as typing and formatting correspondence, memorandums, briefing notes, cabinet information items, and various reports including statistical reports and the various court documents referred to above.
As the successful candidate, you will have demonstrated your knowledge of legal terminology with a familiarity of case law and legislation and an ability to analyze legal information and find cases, legislation, and academic articles on electronic databases such as Publications Saskatchewan, CanLII, QuickLaw, and Westlaw/Carswell. You will have an understanding of the Canadian court system, including all levels of court in Saskatchewan, the Federal Court, the Supreme Court of Canada, and certain administrative tribunals. In addition, you will have the ability to maintain confidentiality, prioritize tasks, and have an eye for detail in order to ensure the highest quality of work.
Typically, the knowledge and abilities required for this position would have been obtained though completion of a diploma in office education or office administration and/or related experience in a legal setting.
