The role
We have an exciting opportunity within our Legal department for a Legal Counsel. As a valued member of the Shaw Legal Team, the successful candidate will perform legal support services for our Wireless and Wireline (Consumer division) and have the accountabilities described below.
A typical day
• Working collaboratively with stakeholders across the enterprise to identify and mitigate risks and determine creative solutions in service of Shaw’s corporate objectives; • Responsible for reviewing, drafting, and negotiating various commercial agreements in collaboration with various teams to ensure Shaw’s business interests are protected; • Providing timely and practical advice to the Wireless and Consumer Wireline teams in respect of product and service development and implementation matters while ensuring the business complies with all relevant regulatory codes, standards, and consumer protection requirements; • Responsible for drafting various consumer-facing documents, agreements and advertising disclosures, and conducting enterprise-wide marketing reviews to ensure competition law compliance; • Providing ongoing contract support, including training and coaching in connection with legal requirements, corporate policies, procedures, and contract matters; and • Other legal related accountabilities that may arise.
Your skills/experience

The Atlantic Regional Office is responsible for federal prosecutions in Nova Scotia, Newfoundland and Labrador, New Brunswick and Prince Edward Island. The regional headquarters is located in Halifax, Nova Scotia, and there are local offices in Moncton, New Brunswick and St. John’s, Newfoundland and Labrador. The region has four major areas of prosecution focus: CDSA prosecutions; regulatory prosecutions, including environmental and fisheries matters; proceeds of crime; and economic crime. • Evaluate, interpret and negotiate costs, terms, and conditions of research contracts/agreements undertaken by the University that are proposed by external clients; reviewing work proposals for ethical, financial, and legal conformity to the University and sponsor’s policies. For clinical trials, ensure proposed contracts are consistent with policies and procedures of the affiliated hospital and relevant Faculty.
• Authorize the opening of research contract accounts. Consult with the Manager, Research & Special Purpose Funds in Financial Services to ensure contracts remain within the allocated budget; discuss appropriate action should spending issues occur.
• Propose, develop, implement, oversee, review and advise on University research policies related to the research and innovation enterprise.
• Interpret legal documents and provide advice to the VPRI , senior officials, ORS and other administrative units, and academic units regarding research at the University. Respond to requests from external sponsors regarding University policies and guidelines and sponsor requirements.
