Job Description:

LITIGATION COUNSEL

 

Sun Life (TSX: SLF) is a leading international financial services organization providing a diverse range of insurance, wealth and asset management solutions to individual and corporate clients. Sun Life has operations in a number of markets worldwide, including Canada, the United States, the UK and Asia. 

 

We are looking for a litigator with superior judgment and interpersonal skills to join our Canadian Legal Team in the role of Litigation Counsel. This is an agile role based in either our Toronto or Waterloo office.

 

The successful candidate will have a strong focus on client impact.  They will be required to provide proactive, timely and strategic legal support to internal business partners.  This will involve some travel for file-related matters. No travel will be required while COVID restrictions are in place.

 

What will you do?

  • Directly manage a large caseload of life and health insurance cases as counsel of record
  • Litigate cases independently including conducting discoveries, mediations and motions
  • Contribute as needed to litigation team projects and initiatives involving other teams and stakeholders while managing day-to-day aspects of file work
  • Give clear and concise advice to business partners and colleagues on litigated and non-litigated matters

 

What do you need to succeed?

  • Be a lawyer in good standing with the Law Society of Ontario
  • Have 5+ years of experience managing a high-volume litigation practice (in-house experience and knowledge of disability law would be an asset)
  • Be enthusiastic about leveraging data and technology in your practice
  • Engage and influence others with confidence, candour and openness
  • Build productive relationships with colleagues and business partners
  • Be resilient and able to adapt to change
  • Maintain a continuous improvement mindset
  • Consider and consult relevant information to articulate key issues and risks
