We are seeking one (1) Legal Counsel with a minimum of five (5) years’ relevant practicing experience to provide advice and services to departments and public agencies of the GNWT, primarily as a solicitor.
Responsibilities vary but will include a major emphasis on:
(a) reviewing and drafting of a wide variety of documents such as contracts, agreements, memoranda of understanding and requests for proposals/calls for tender, including for use in connection with corporate, commercial, procurement and real estate transactions;
(b) rendering legal opinions on a variety of subjects, including access to information and protection of privacy issues, real and personal property, corporate and commercial issues, procurement issues, statutory interpretation issues, constitutional issues, administrative law issues, environmental and regulatory issues and Indigenous law issues;
(c) and possibly the provision of legal advice to the GNWT in connection with Indigenous land claim/self-government negotiations as a member of one or more negotiation teams.
Responsibilities may also include a minor emphasis on litigation of a wide variety of matters before courts, tribunals and arbitrators in relation to claims by or against the GNWT and certain of its public agencies.
Candidates must be eligible for membership in the Law Society of the Northwest Territories and must have five (5) or more years’ relevant experience that demonstrates legal competencies required to meet the demands of a government legal services environment. The position requires excellent analytical, research, communication, writing, interpersonal and practice management skills.
The position requires the ability to analyze the legal impact of significant issues. The successful candidate will be expected to work independently on matters of recognized complexity and the majority of the work is assigned in a general way by the Director of Legal Division. Some travel will be required, depending on responsibilities assigned.
A Law Degree as well as a minimum of five (5) years’ relevant practicing experience, particularly in the Northwest Territories, a high level of knowledge and expertise in the law, and the respect of clients and colleagues.
Candidates must be members in good standing of the Law Society of the Northwest Territories (LSNT) or be immediately eligible for membership in the LSNT. Evidence of membership in the LSNT is a prerequisite to employment.
