The IESO is seeking up to two new lawyers to join its legal team. The successful applicants will have a minimum of four years post-call experience, preferably working on complex matters in leading law firms or fast paced in-house environments. The position will depend on successful applicant experience.
Accountabilities
As a member of the Legal Department, Counsel will work collaboratively, advising on multi-disciplinary legal projects, providing strategic legal advice on a range of complex legal, regulatory, policy and business issues, ensuring that advice is linked to the organization’s strategic objectives, and acting as an integral part of internal and external project teams. Counsel will provide high-quality solution-oriented legal advice and guidance on a range of matters supporting IESO’s strategy and mandate, including:

The Independent Electricity System Operator (IESO) works at the centre of the province’s power system, ensuring Ontarians have access to reliable and cost-effective electricity when and where they need it. We operate the province’s electricity grid 24/7, design, run and oversee the wholesale electricity markets, and plan and prepare to meet Ontario’s electricity needs – now and into the future.
The opportunity (1 regular and 1 temporary position)
The IESO is seeking up to two new lawyers to join its legal team. The successful applicants will have a minimum of four years post-call experience, preferably working on complex matters in leading law firms or fast paced in-house environments. The position will depend on successful applicant experience.
Accountabilities
As a member of the Legal Department, Counsel will work collaboratively, advising on multi-disciplinary legal projects, providing strategic legal advice on a range of complex legal, regulatory, policy and business issues, ensuring that advice is linked to the organization’s strategic objectives, and acting as an integral part of internal and external project teams. Counsel will provide high-quality solution-oriented legal advice and guidance on a range of matters supporting IESO’s strategy and mandate, including:
Management of electricity generation contracts
Acquisition of new electricity system resources (including from electricity storage facilities) and management of energy contracts
Implementation of electricity conservation and demand management programs, and innovation and grid modernization initiatives, including through IESO’s grid innovation and hydrogen innovation funds
Electricity market operations including interpretation, administration and development of the IESO’s Market Rules and related matters
Interpretation and compliance with statutory and regulatory requirements
Transmission system planning
Disputes that may arise under or in relation to Market Rules or energy procurement contracts, and
General operations of the IESO, including matters relating to procurements of goods and services (including IT-related acquisitions), cybersecurity, non-disclosure agreements, freedom of information access requests, privacy law, records management, and related legal research
Who you are
A member in good standing with the Law Society of Ontario
We are looking for a minimum of 4 years post call experience in corporate commercial or transactional law gained either in a leading law firm or in-house law department setting. Applicants with more than 8 years post call experience may be considered for a Senior Counsel role.

Position Context:

The incumbent is responsible for analyzing and drafting contracts and proposing flexible approaches meeting the needs of the parties with whom the University is contracting while ensuring that all legal requirements are taken into account and correctly dealt with, with a focus on compliance matters and institutional risk.
Main Responsibilities:
Duties and responsibilities may evolve over time, and from time to time.
Update, and where required develop, a set of standard (template) agreements useful to research related functions;
Review and approve research related contracts and agreements, including commercially driven agreements, where required and ensure they meet legal requirements;
Negotiate provisions of research related contracts at the request of Research Services officers, whenever legal or business expertise is required;
Advise Research units on matters of policy (IP, copyright, ethics, research data and privacy, investigation of research misconduct, etc.), including training of VPRI personnel as required.
Support policy and guideline development in accordance with granting agencies and institutional requirements, through articulation of issues and principles, and drafting, as required.
Interpret contract law as it applies to University policies and regulations related to research.
Investigate, conduct research and provide advice and counsel on a variety of legal, corporate, commercial and contractual issues.
Analyze the scope and complexities of legal issues; identify and mitigate risks to the legal rights of the University and guard against associated legal risk; articulate alternatives and recommend solutions.
Provide legal advice and professional guidance to researchers and existing or potential partners within assigned areas/sectors of responsibility as it relates to research contracts and agreements.
Monitor, interpret and propose measures meant to implement existing and emerging legislation related to compliance (such as, but not limited to, legislation governing the protection of personal information) and applicable federal and provincial government guidelines (such as, but not limited to, the National Security Guidelines for Research Partnerships) and support the assessment of operational impacts by relevant units.
Education and Experience:
B.C.L.
Member of the Bar of Quebec.
Five (5) years' - Seven (7) years' related experience
Experience in commercial and contractual law, ideally with a focus on intellectual property rights and protection of personal information, with negotiating and drafting experience.
Experience in the higher education sector will be an asset.

The Role
Medcan is looking for an experienced and well-rounded in-house legal counsel to join the company on a full-time basis as Corporate Counsel. This role requires a well-rounded lawyer with expertise in the highly regulated healthcare industry, commercial and consumer contract drafting and negotiation, medico-legal issue and litigation management, and employment law to collaborate with and support the business and expanding clinic. Strong communication and problem-solving skills as well as the ability to collaborate in a dynamic and fast-paced environment are crucial to be successful in the position.
The Accountabilities:
Draft, negotiate, and review vendor, private client, physician, and corporate contracts.
Draft and review policies, consents, and protocols.
Support Human Resources with day-to-day issues and review more complex employment law contracts, letters, and arrangements.
Oversee medico-legal issues and inquiries such as clinic operating procedures, risk management, occupational health and safety and consent to treatment. Daily problem solving and communication with clinic, patient support center, and clients.
Collaborate internally to ensure compliance with applicable privacy laws and, as necessary, assisting with incident response.
Act as a subject matter expert internally on legal inquiries coming from all areas of the business, including liaising with external counsel when necessary.
Developing templates for Medcan’s standard contracts, and standardizing review processes.
Investigate, recommend, and maintain a knowledge management system, including consideration of contract management.
Keeping current with legislative changes and working with the business units to implement changes to ensure compliance, including areas such regulatory compliance and consumer protection issues.
The Requirements:
8 to 10 years’ experience in a mix of commercial contract law, medico-legal law, employment law
In-house legal counsel experience, experience in healthcare or hospital setting preferred
