Our team is growing and we are actively looking to hire a talented and motivated lawyer to join our corporate legal team. Reporting to the Director, Privacy, Records & Corporate Legal and based in the Markham office of Allstate Canada, the Corporate Counsel will be required to provide proactive, timely and strategic legal advice to senior business leaders and their teams, as well as related support areas such as Compliance and Corporate Risk.  This will involve advising on day-to-day operational and legal matters, product development, underwriting and claims issues, reviewing product and marketing materials, and drafting agreements. The Corporate Counsel will have the opportunity to work on a wide variety of corporate projects, including insurance regulatory matters, corporate governance, commercial agreements, privacy, and records information management.  He or she will also advise on applicable laws, policies, procedures, and regulatory obligations, and keep abreast of legal regulatory developments and changes.   

Ideal candidates will have 3-5 years of Corporate/Commercial experience gained from a major firm or corporation. Excellent communication and drafting skills will be required.  Knowledge of insurance legal and regulatory environment would be considered an asset.

Responsibilities:

  • provide strategic and practical advice on corporate organizational activities of Allstate, including ongoing compliance;
  • advise on insurance regulatory compliance as well as support company’s regulatory monitoring, filing and continuous disclosure documentation;
  • work independently and with project teams to develop and manage key commercial contracts; and
  • provide high-quality legal advice on day-to-day operations, including marketing, contesting, CASL, privacy and records information management legal matters.

Qualifications:

  • a member in good standing with the Law Society of Ontario with a minimum of 3 years of relevant experience at a law firm or in-house legal team;
  • ability to provide sound legal advice and suggest business-oriented solutions to complex legal issues;
  • understands how to prioritize tasks, push files forward and escalates issues appropriately;
  • able to take a risk-based approach to the prioritization of work;
  • able to build relationships across multiple areas of the business; and
  • enthusiastic about leveraging data and technology to provide legal solutions to our business partners and inform business strategy.
