Reporting to the Manager, Claims Legal Counsel, you will represent Desjardins General Insurance Inc., its affiliates and its insureds before courts of first instance and courts of appeal and manage complex legal files that are more strategic and political in nature.

In addition, you will advise the Claims Division and other organization sectors regarding legal orientations pertaining to claims files. You will participate in various committees and will explain the legal impacts resulting from the decisions under consideration. You will also serve as coach for other Legal Affairs legal advisors with the objective of developing your colleagues’ skills. Lastly, you will serve in an advisory capacity in your field, supporting senior management and decision-making bodies.

The nature of the files will require in-depth expertise in your field.


Main responsiilities

  • Responsible for complete management of complex litigation files, as either plaintiff or defendant, regarding insurance law and third-party liability for both individuals and companies.
  • To this end, issue opinions, develop strategies, draft procedures, conduct interviews, negotiate and represent the company and its insured before courts of first instance and courts of appeal.
  • Advise the organization’s units and decision-making bodies with respect to the handling of claims files.
  • Interpret laws and regulations and issue legal opinions.
  • Serve as a coach, reference and resource person in your field.
  • Lead or contribute to various claims mandates and special projects.

  • Bachelor of Law or related field
  • At least 6 years of experience in property and casualty insurance


Please note that other combinations of qualifications and relevant experience may be considered

  • Have been a member of the Barreau du Québec for at least 10 years
  • For vacant positions available in Quebec, please note that knowledge of French is required


Connaissances spécifiques

Thorough understanding of the property and casualty insurance claims sector , Independent speaker, intermediate knowledge of English (an asset)
