Our Investigations, Monitoring & Enforcement (IME) group is seeking a full-time Staff Lawyer. IME Staff Lawyers conduct investigations into serious allegations of lawyer misconduct. The investigations involve a broad spectrum of conduct issues including misappropriation or improper handling of client funds, misuse of trust accounts, misrepresentations, conflicts and accounting rule breaches.

The IME Staff Lawyers are responsible for conducting investigations in keeping with our mandate to protect the public interest and key responsibilities include:

  • Conducting thorough, efficient, and timely investigations by gathering and assessing evidence, independently and as part of a team;
  • Conducting interviews of the subject lawyers and witnesses, as needed;
  • Collecting and reviewing documentary evidence;
  • Preparing clear, concise and well analyzed opinions for the Discipline Committee’s consideration;
  • Presenting opinions to the Discipline Committee; and
  • Other duties as the Deputy Chief Legal Officer may require.

Qualifications:

To be considered for this position, candidates must possession the following qualifications:

  • Practicing membership with the Law Society of BC, or eligibility for membership;
  • Minimum 5 years of recent practice experience;
  • Superior investigatory, interviewing, and communication skills;
  • Excellent legal writing skills;
  • Ability to handle complex, diverse files in a timely manner; and
  • Ability to work collaboratively as a part of a team.

The terms and conditions of the collective agreement between the Law Society of BC and the Professional Employees Association apply to this position.

This position is within the Professional Conduct job classification and the salary range for this position in 2020 is $114,226.61 to $123,185.56 per annum. Starting salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.
