Reporting to the Legal Supervisor, Municipal Services & Enforcement, Solicitors’ Section, here’s how you’ll make a difference to the City of Edmonton as a solicitor: 
  • Appear before City Council and/or Council Committees 
  • Provide sound legal advice and recommendations regarding various issues including business retention and expansion, funding, emergency management and municipal law 
  • Research and represent the City on privacy matters 
  • Research and apply the law in divergent factual situations 
  • Gather facts through discussions with clients and documents 
  • Draft complex and standard form legal agreements, documents and opinions 
  • Take a proactive role in providing recommendations to avoid risk/liability 
  • Additional related duties as required
Qualifications :
  • Membership with the Law Society of Alberta or the ability to attain immediate membership with the Law Society of Alberta upon appointment 
  • 2 years practicing law post articles is preferred 
  • Experience in contract drafting is an asset 
  • Experience with and understanding of municipal governance and processes is an asset 
  • Experience in municipal law is an asset 
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently with confidence under time constraints 
  • Good verbal, negotiating and written communication skills 
  • Strong analytical, problem solving and decision making skills 
  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work well in a team environment 
  • Strong legal research skills and computer literacy
