The City of St. John's is seeking a temporary maternity replacement lawyer to join its team providing legal advice and services to Council and staff. Reporting to the City Solicitor, the successful candidate must be able to build relationships and inspire confidence in interactions with Council, staff, and other stakeholders.
The primary areas of responsibility for this position will include prosecution of traffic tickets and violations of the City’s by-laws and regulations; drafting corporate and commercial documents in relation to criminal and civil litigation; and providing advice to Council and staff on a variety of matters. The successful candidate will be required to represent the City at Provincial Court and all other levels of Court, in addition to appearing at administrative tribunals, hearings, boards, committees, etc.
The successful applicant will be required to participate in all training programs applicable to this position and other related work. The preferred candidate will have a LLB or JD designation from a recognized law school; be a member in good standing of the Law Society of Newfoundland and Labrador and have a minimum of two (2) years of related experience following admission to the Bar.
The successful candidate must be a person of integrity who is able to work independently but collaboratively, in a collegial team environment. The ability to work under tight deadlines within a fast paced environment is a necessity. The individual must demonstrate excellent interpersonal, communication, problem solving, analytical and organizational skills combined with solid time management, computer and research abilities. A solid knowledge and understanding of the public sector environment and prosecution experience would be an asset.
