As a employment and labour lawyer, you help protect the organization’s legal interests by ensuring it complies with all laws. You also play a key role in making sure that its rights are protected and obligations are met. You represent the organization in situations involving its legal interests. You may be responsible for one or more sub-specialties, such as contested matters and the Office of the Corporate Secretary (ethics and professional conduct, official registries, meeting minutes, the general meeting, etc.).

You lead development projects and strategic initiatives that are complex and innovative. Your initiatives require extensive knowledge of your specialty area.

You make recommendations on the planning and execution of operationally and conceptually complex projects and initiatives that require comprehensive analysis and understanding of the organization and line of business. Coordination is critical, so you frequently interact with stakeholders working in many other fields. Interpersonal savvy is therefore essential.

You serve as specialist advisor and subject matter expert, as well as resource person and coach for decision-making bodies

 

 

 

Main Responsibilities

  • Advise various sectors of the business on employment law, employment agreements, policy development and implementation, human rights, health and safety, and workplace accommodation.
  • Draft pleadings, advise on litigation strategies and represent employers in proceedings at various administrative tribunals, courts and arbitrations.
  • Provides expert advice and consultation to managers and human resources consultants.
  • Analyzes, advises and supports the various organization units with appeals before civil and administrative court.
  • Issues opinions on facts and applicable legislation and on actions to take.
  • Represents the organization before the courts, and drafts appropriate procedures, pleads cases or negotiates for best possible conditions.
  • Assumes responsibility for or participates in special mandates or projects when required. Represents his/her sector on various committees.
  • Monitors the various organization sectors' compliance with applicable legislation and regulations, and cooperates with sectors in charge of compliance to provide them with the necessary.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in a related field
  • A minimum of six years of relevant experience

  •  Must be a member in good standing of the Law Society of Upper Canada / Law Society of Ontario
