This is an excellent opportunity for an experienced librarian who is highly motivated, service-oriented and has excellent research skills. The City of Toronto is seeking a Legal Librarian to join the Legal Services division to provide reference service to the division's lawyers while also assisting with the maintenance of internal legal information resources.
Reporting to the Head Librarian, the Legal Librarian will provide research and reference assistance to lawyers, articling students and other staff in the Legal Services division:
- Catalogues and classifies library materials using an integrated library system, including original cataloguing. Works with the Library Information Officer on the input of data into Library databases, including books and internal legal precedents.
- Evaluates and analyzes Division’s library/information needs and resources and makes recommendations to the Head Librarian for methods to improve access to such resources.
- Designs, develops and maintains library databases. Oversees input of data in accordance with Library procedures.
- Assists and advises researchers in the use of research tools and records, and makes materials available
- Liaises with the Information Technology (IT) staff to ensure the proper functioning of the electronic library resources used by the Library.
- Liaises with publishers and internal accounting group concerning invoices, purchases, etc.
- Provides training to staff in using legal resources, including library resources and legal online search services.
- Creates legal research guides and other training guides.
- Conducts research and makes recommendations in the determination of library acquisitions and selection of library materials in all media formats. Prepares reports.
- Makes recommendations with regard to the design, implementation and maintenance of library systems to facilitate information retrieval.
- Conducts tours and provides orientation sessions for lawyers, articling students and other Legal Division staff.
- Identifies issues associated with the provision of reference service and works with the Head Librarian to implement the Library’s reference, research and training programs.
Your application must describe your qualifications as they relate to:
- Post-secondary education in Library Science, Information Studies, or a related discipline and/or the equivalent combination of education and/or experience.
- Considerable experience working in a legal library environment.
- Experience conducting research using legal databases, including Lexis Advance Quicklaw, WestlawNextCanada, CanLII, Hein Online, and other library or legal research databases.
- Experience using integrated library systems such as Soutron or Sirsi.
You must also have:
- Proficiency using Microsoft Office suite and legal research software.
- Extensive knowledge/understanding of specialized concepts, principles and methods of Library Science.
- Familiarity with searching by-laws and City Council reports.
- Good understanding of integrated library systems.
- Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with all levels of staff and the public.
- Good written, verbal and presentation skills.
- Ability to work within an environment of continuous learning.
- Ability to plan, organize and manage work independently with minimal supervision and co-operatively as a member of a team.
- Sound judgement in public and personnel relations.
