Kinder Morgan is the largest independent terminal operator in North America, providing a strong, reliable network of terminals to serve our customers’ storage, distribution, blending and logistical needs. These assets include a portfolio of strategic infrastructure across western Canada including terminal facilities in Alberta providing merchant storage to customers as well as rail terminals offering loading and delivery services for liquids products.
Kinder Morgan Canada Limited (“KML”) is seeking a lawyer for the position of Senior Legal Counsel / Assistant General Counsel in Calgary to provide legal support to KML’s expanding terminals and pipeline assets. The attorney will be the sole Kinder Morgan attorney in Calgary. The attorney will work independently with non-legal business people as well as collaboratively with Kinder Morgan attorneys in Houston, Texas to provide legal advice and work product. This position will be of interest to lawyers looking to work closely as part of a legal team providing advice on significant matters to a wide range of energy specialists, with a focus on realizing practical business results.
Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
Advises on matters which have legal implications or require legal risk analysis;
Drafts/prepares/assists in the drafting of agreements, correspondence and ancillary documentation in respect of legal matters pertaining to KML;
Manages external counsel;
Interprets regulations relating to KML business activities, employment issues, etc.; and
Reviews and assists in the updating of corporate policies and legal documents for KML.
The candidate should be proficient in a number of different aspects of business and energy law, particularly as it relates to commercial contract drafting, procurement, land matters, operational matters, litigation, employment law, asset development and acquisition, joint ventures, corporate compliance advice, securities law, and Aboriginal law. Additional requirements include:
Bachelor of Law (LL.B) or Juris Doctor (JD) from a recognized institution;
An active member with The Law Society of Alberta; and
Minimum of 7 years experience working within an in house environment is considered preferable.
Demonstrated knowledge working in a number of different aspects of business and energy law, particularly as it relates to commercial contract drafting, procurement, land matters, operational matters, litigation, employment law, asset development and acquisition, joint ventures, corporate compliance advice, securities law, and Aboriginal law.
