About Us

 

 

The Legal Services Division of the Department of Justice is the government’s law office, responsible for the provision of all legal services (excluding prosecutions) to the Province of Nova Scotia.  As such, the lawyers in the Legal Services Division are accountable for providing legal services on a broad range of matters to the Government and many of its agencies, boards and commissions. The Legal Services Division consists of Solicitor Services, Litigation Services and the Registry of Regulations. 

 

 

 

 

About Our Opportunity

 

 

The solicitor is responsible for providing effective and efficient legal counsel to the Government of Nova Scotia and its agencies, and to ensure that public affairs are administered in accordance with the law.  In this role, you will provide legal advice and opinions on matters of law and legal policy to senior government officials.

 

As a Solicitor, you will conduct research, prepare and review legal documents, and draft and interpret contracts, legislation and regulations. In this role, you will provide legal advice to the Crown.

 

 

 

 

About You

 

 

As our successful candidate you will:

 

  • Be a practicing member in good standing of the Nova Scotia Barristers’ Society (or eligible for practicing membership)
  • Have a minimum of one year of practice experience

     

Your experience advising government departments or agencies would be considered an asset in this role, as would practice experience in one or more of the following areas: administrative law, family law, contracts law, constitutional law, enforcement of civil judgments, and legislative drafting and interpretation.

 

As our successful candidate, you will possess excellent research, analytical and organizational skills.  You will communicate effectively and persuasively, orally and in writing, and function with a minimum of supervision in a team environment.  You have demonstrated abilities to respond to client needs for quality legal services, to anticipate problems and to work effectively with your clients toward resolutions.  In addition, you are effective in demanding circumstances, you offer creative and innovative solutions to complex challenges, and use your flexibility to adapt and thrive in a continuously changing and demanding environment. 

 

We will assess the above qualifications and competencies using one or more of the following tools: written examination, standardized tests, oral presentations, interview(s), and reference checks.

This is a term position on the Justice/LAE/OAA Solicitor Services team.

 

 

 

 

 

Pay Grade:  MCL 29 

 

Salary Range:  $3,639.00 - $5,800.00 Bi-Weekly
