The City of Calgary Law Department has an immediate opportunity for a lawyer with experience in prosecuting municipal and regulatory offences. You will have a significant degree of responsibility and autonomy within a team-oriented environment. We are looking for an applicant who wants to be a leader in the field of municipal enforcement matters. General responsibilities will include:

  • Advocacy work at all levels of court, including prosecutions in Provincial Court Criminal and Traffic Division, Youth Court, Summary Conviction Appeals and Court of Appeal.
  • Advise enforcement staff on legal issues affecting day-to-day operations, policies, Charter issues, and training.
  • Provide strategic advice to City Council and liaising with Court staff, the judiciary, members of the public, officers, and members of the criminal defense bar.


  • Juris Doctor (J.D.), Bachelor of Laws (LL.B) or equivalent degree from a recognized institution and be an active member or eligible for membership with The Law Society of Alberta.
  • Minimum of 1 year of trial experience preferably in the areas of municipal and criminal law is required.
  • We are looking for an applicant who wants to develop a profile as a leader in the field of municipal prosecutions.
  • Knowledge of the criminal process, regulatory prosecutions, and trial procedure.
  • The successful applicant will be resilient, optimistic, and a skilled communicator.

Compensation : Salary commensurate with experience Lawyer 1 $77,891 - 126,184 per annum Days of Work : This position typically works a 5 day work week, earning 1 day off in each 3 week cycle.
