Job Description

The TRU Legal Clinic Society was incorporated with TRU as the sole Member. It is the legal entity whose purpose is to provide legal assistance through the TRU Community Legal Clinic (“TRU CLC”).

TRU CLC is mandated to provide legal services to low income clients, as well as opportunities for practical learning for students from the TRU Faculty of Law. This work includes case files, community outreach and public legal education.

The Part-Time Supervising Lawyer is responsible for training and supervising student clinicians, providing litigation support to student clinicians and assisting with the day-to-day operations of the TRU CLC in conjunction with other Clinic staff.

The Part-Time Supervising Lawyer works with the Clinic staff, under the direction of the Executive Director, to supervise TRU Law students in the provision of legal assistance, which may include drafting various documents for clients, including pleadings for small claims matters, simple wills, powers of attorney, and representation agreements and other matters as permitted by the Law Society of B.C.

This position is responsible for assisting with the day-to-day operations of TRU CLC, including:

  • consulting with students during and after client intake interviews to determine the level of services that may be provided to the client;
  • reviewing correspondence and legal documents prepared by student clinicians;
  • supervising student clinicians during tribunal and court hearings and assisting them in preparing for such hearings;
  • developing practical resources for use by TRU CLC’s student clinicians, particularly in the Part-Time Supervising Lawyer’s areas of expertise; and
  • coordinating with the Executive Director and the Full-Time Supervising Lawyer to develop the orientation, training and supervision of TRU CLC student clinicians

This is a part time (20 hours/week) position.

This position requires an individual who: has a LLB or a JD from a Canadian law school or from another common law country; is a member in good standing of the Law Society of British Columbia, or of another common law province’s law society; and who demonstrates the following attributes:

  • a minimum of three years of experience as a lawyer within relevant legal areas;
  • experience in civil and, particularly, criminal litigation;
  • ideally, substantial experience working or volunteering in a poverty law clinic or a similar legal environment; and
  • a flexible schedule that allows the Part-Time Supervising Lawyer to balance work for TRU CLC with other professional obligations and to provide additional litigation support for student clinicians during busy periods.
