ONA is seeking to hire a Labour Relations Officer (Litigator) to join our Litigation Team in the Ottawa office. This position reports to the Manager, Litigation and works within the boundaries of ONA’s governing and administrative policies, vision and strategic outcomes, and team standards. This position provides legal services to ONA including staff and Bargaining Units in a manner that advances the interests of ONA and its members as the primary focus of work.

The primary home office will be Ottawa. Regular travel is required, especially in the East District Service Region.

This is what else you can expect from this dynamic role:

  • The Litigator is accountable for the functions of the Litigation Team mandate, which involves contract administration, achieving ONA’s position, maintaining the collective and individual rights of members, and providing strategic advice in relation to contract interpretation and related areas.
  • The Litigator primarily represents ONA and members at rights arbitrations.
  • The Litigator acts as a key resource providing legal advice and strategy regarding arbitration cases, answering questions, and assisting in the timely resolution of grievances with both a pragmatic and legal lens.
  • The Litigator demonstrates solid client relations and communication skills, and sound professional judgment.
  • The Litigator consults with the Manager, Litigation and Team Leader, as needed, but is also able to act independently in working out and solving issues that arise in her/his work.
  • The Litigator actively participates as a team member to ensure that the organizational accountabilities of the litigation team are met.
  • The Litigator makes observable contributions to the success of other team members and to the overall performance of the team, including meeting team targets.
  • The Litigator delivers timely, quality work, and ensures goals or assignments are met within established time frames.
  • The Litigator also acts as a leader and mentor, and makes contributions toward the overall improvement of the litigation team and the litigation of cases, including work processes.

What we are looking for:

The successful candidate will possess the following:

  • A LL.B/Juris Doctor (J.D.) is required.
  • Bilingualism (French/English) is required.
  • A minimum of two (2) years of relevant work experience and/or demonstrated knowledge in representation of Trade Unions at arbitration and/or related practice areas including human rights/accommodation, occupational health & safety, and proceedings before the Ontario Labour Relations Board (OLRB) under the Labour Relations Act, Public Sector Labour Relations Transition Act, and/or the Hospital Labour Disputes Arbitration Act.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and experience in labour relations/industrial relations.
  • Certificate of training in alternative dispute resolution/mediation and/or oral advocacy is an asset (or equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered).
  • Excellent client relations, interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Demonstrated advocacy and presentation skills.
  • Being a registered nurse is an asset.

The successful candidate must be able to travel, possess a valid driver’s license and have access to an automobile for business use.
