Full time Lawyer (In House Counsel)

Job Description

You will provide legal and risk management advice and support regarding insurance investment products, segregated funds and other legal matters. Working under the general supervision of the Director of Legal Services, you will be part of a small but dynamic, high performance legal team that supports all business units within the Company.

Impact Statement

  • Provide advice on a broad range of complex legal and regulatory issues related to insurance investment products, segregated funds and other legal matters to proactively manage the Company’s regulatory, legal and reputation risk
  • Act as a trusted legal advisor to employees and management
  • Provide leadership in complex, sensitive or strategic legal matters

Knowledge / Experience / Certification

  • 8+ years legal work experience, preferably as in-house counsel for a Canadian insurance company
  • Extensive knowledge of insurance investments products (in particular individual variable insurance contracts and annuities) and segregated funds, experience in product development, distribution and administration of these products and accounts and familiarity with the regulatory requirements, industry association guidelines and industry practices that apply to them
  • Called to the Bar in Ontario and/or Quebec
  • Bilingualism (English/French) and knowledge of technology law are assets

Education / Professional Courses

  • Completion of a law degree (with courses or practical experience in corporate law and insurance law)

Responsibilities include

  • Identify potential legal, regulatory and reputation risks in a variety of matters
  • Balancing risk-taking with legal prudence, provide sound legal advice and recommendations to business units as to most effective course of action to achieve business objectives while mitigating risks
  • Work as part of a team on special projects and independently on day to day inquiries, complaints and miscellaneous legal matters
  • Draft, review and negotiate contracts and other forms of legal documentation
  • Proactively work with senior leaders to manage legal and reputation risk
  • Provide senior legal guidance to support the development and modification of practices and procedures to conform to legal requirements
  • Build relationships with business unit partners and provide training and support on legal matters, as required
  • Keep up-to-date with relevant statute law, case law and court procedures in a wide variety of subject areas
  • Provide leadership support to the department for strategic planning and plan implementation
  • Coach and mentor team members and participate in learning and development within the department
