Your Job



In this new position in Intact’s Legal Claims West department, you will provide complete and effective management of Surety cases for Intact and its affiliated companies. The successful applicant will be the lawyer responsible for day-to-day management of litigated Surety files. Duties will include directing litigation involving building contractors, managing commercial bond files, and advising the Underwriting and Claims sections of the Surety department on strategic decisions. The incumbent will also play an active role in drafting indemnity agreements. The position also includes an important mentoring aspect, as the incumbent will work closely with two other lawyers to develop their competencies in the Surety field.

Intact Insurance is seeking to fill the following position for its Edmonton, Calgary, or Vancouver  location.


  • Responsible for overall management of litigated Surety files;
  • If a bonded contractor becomes insolvent, take an active part in preparing action plans with the other stakeholders in order to find alternative solutions;
  • Act as the company’s legal representative in dealing with banks, trustees, secured creditors, other sureties, and indemnitors;
  • In case of non-completion of a contract by a contractor, provide advice on resumption of the contractor’s operations;
  • Assist and advise on RFPs and ensure effective resumption of work, in accordance with the terms of the surety bond and construction contracts;
  • Support the Surety Claims department in negotiations with financial institutions and insolvency trustees;
  • Draft and review letters and agreements of indemnity;
  • Defend the surety’s interest and assist in recovering receivables from the defaulting contractor;
  • Contribute to strategic plans for intervention and make recommendations to senior Surety management;
  • Advise the client regarding the need to obtain additional or complementary evaluations or opinions;
  • Support the Surety Claims department in negotiations with other parties to construction projects;
  • Provide oral and written opinions on the interpretation of surety agreements and/or on specific or general legal questions with repercussions for the Surety Claims department, and on current trends in jurisprudence;
  • Prepare and present training seminars for the Surety Claims department and write articles on topics of interest for internal distribution;
  • Work, as a member of the Legal Claims West team, to implement programs and procedures to provide cost-effective and quality legal services, both internally and externally.

Your Skills



  • Bachelor's degree in Law with 10+ years as a member of the Law Society of Alberta;
  • Solid skills and knowledge of insolvency, the Companies' Creditors Arrangement Act and the Bankruptcy and Insolvency Act, and/or in the area of surety litigation and surety law generally;
  • Analytical skills, ability to work independently, and solid communication skills;
  • Energetic and efficient, with Team spirit and leadership skills;
  • Ability to support and assist other team members in their development;
  • Interest in Secured Transactions and some Corporate/Business knowledge, would also be an asset.
  • Bilingual in French and English is an asset.
