Job Summary

 

The Vice President & General Counsel role is responsible to identify, manage and mitigate legal, regulatory and corporate governance risks, to enable business to achieve strategic and commercial goals in accordance with applicable laws and regulations. This role is expected to act as a trusted adviser to the Chief Agent, the Business Executive team and the Board of Directors.

 

Job Qualifications

 

Years of Experience: 12 or More Years in the Insurance Industry Law Practice

 

Education Requirement: Bachelor of Law Degree (LLB) or Juris Doctorate and Member of the Bar

 

Additional Qualifications

 

  • Experience as Corporate Chief Counsel and experience managing a legal team
  • Experience managing relationships with insurance regulators
  • Strong business acumen and ability to think creatively
  • Strong, verbal, written communication and presentation skills

     

Business Qualifications

 

  • Proven track record of leading teams in a diverse matrix environment and providing thought leadership with respect to legal and regulatory issues
  • Proven ability to manage to tight deadlines and priorities
  • Excellent communication skills with the ability to effectively influence others as well as present issues, options and recommendations to both technical and non-technical audiences

     

Job Accountabilities

 

This role is responsible to identify, manage and mitigate legal, regulatory and corporate governance risks to enable the business to achieve strategic and commercial goals. This role acts as a trusted advisor to the Board and Chief Agent.

 

This individual will lead, motivate and coach a team of legal professionals. This position is also accountable to:

 

  • Guide the business in relation to insurance laws and regulation along the business value chain, from licensing and product development through to re-insurance
  • Oversee the relationship and interactions with insurance regulators
  • Guide and advise the business on developing and maintaining appropriate corporate governance
  • Identify, manage and mitigate operational risks for the business
  • Ensure coordination and alignment with the business and corporate functions, including Compliance, Risk Management and Audit
  • Define the legal strategy in line with the business strategy
  • Actively monitor and report on legal trends and laws allowing for timely anticipation of new requirements and their potential impact on the company
  • Establish and manage dispute resolution (excluding claims litigation) and internal investigations in order to protect and preserve the company’s tangible and intangible assets
  • Support remediation and improvement activities
  • Promote the practice of organizational values and ethics, and drive thought leadership in these areas
  • Establish and set the direction for the Legal Department, including the Company secretarial function
  • Manage the budget and legal spends of the Company
