Information received regarding the accommodation needs of applicants will be addressed confidentially.   Follow Manulife on Twitter @ManulifeNews or visit www.manulife.com or www.johnhancock.com.   Job Summary:   Provides legal analysis, advice, counsel and direction to the Retail Markets area, primarily supporting the Mortgage Creditor Insurance business unit, and associated shared services (including the Distribution, Marketing, Finance, Compliance and Operations teams) (“BUs”).   The responsibilities of Counsel, Retail Markets will include:
  • supporting the AVP & Senior Counsel, Insurance Distribution in providing legal and regulatory support and advice to BU executive and raising awareness with BU operations, while anticipating and guarding against associated risks to the BUs on a variety of projects and initiatives related to Retail Markets’ Mortgage Creditor Insurance business.
  • Providing legal and regulatory advice and guidance in support of the Bus’ strategic initiatives.
  • Providing legal opinions, advice and assistance with respect to complex legal, regulatory and compliance matters relating to the marketing, sale and distribution of the BUs’ group creditor products in all Canadian jurisdictions
  • Drafting and reviewing various contracts, agreements, policy certificates and product brochures.
  • Providing legal support on various governance matters, including independent review committee and related policies and procedures
  • Monitoring legislative, regulatory and industry developments, and updating and advising clients on those developments
  • Participating in industry conferences, presentations, committees and working groups
  • Liaising with internal litigation counsel as needed to support contentious claims response
  • Collaborating with other Manulife counsel in support of the broader Retail Markets area and other Manulife businesses on an as needed basis
     
Key Accountabilities:   1. Provide research, drafting and revision to the BUs 2. Participate in coordinating the legal aspects of BUs’ strategic projects with other support functions

3. Provide comprehensive legal support to BUs in all aspects of the business to ensure the BUs achieve their strategic objectives and to ensure the daily operations of the BUs are in compliance with applicable laws and regulations

  • Must be able to shift focus smoothly and reassess priorities in response to changing circumstances

Must display good judgment in assisting BUs, managing and balancing legal and business risks

  Qualifications  

Job Requirements (Knowledge/Skills/Competencies):

  • Called to the bar of a Canadian jurisdiction and qualified to practice law in Ontario
  • 6 - 8 years’ experience in a multi-lawyer in-house law department or law firm
  • Experience with and working knowledge of legislative frameworks related to life and health insurance products and their distribution in Canada, privacy legislation impacting the business, Trademarks, Marketing law, IP law and systems contracting issues
  • Knowledge of the Mortgage creditor insurance business and/or Bank Act requirements related to insurance distribution an asset
  • Strong knowledge of legal principles/practices and processes, and ability to apply them in a corporate environment
  • Excellent analytical, interpretive and research skills
  • Excellent negotiation and influencing skills
  • Excellent organizational skills
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Strong sense of autonomy and ownership
  • Must be able to work effectively as part of a team and collaborate with business partners on various projects and initiatives
  • Highly motivated with great interpersonal skills
