Primary Accountabilities
Legal Assistance / Support to Lawyers

Ensure documents assigned by a lawyer are prepared, filed, and/or served within prescribed or assigned deadlines
Query and retrieve legal case law, precedent materials/documents, or other relevant information as identified by a lawyer
Secretarial / Administrative Support
Prepare correspondence, presentations, and documents of a legal and non-legal matter
Respond to inquiries from internal and external clients and the public
Schedule appointments and maintains lawyers’ calendar and schedule and book rooms, court reporters, travel, discoveries, witnesses, interpreters, case conferences
Books travel and related accommodations when necessary
Works in a team environment, providing coverage to assistants on their team and other teams as assigned by the Legal Services Supervisor
Responding to Inquiries and File Management
Acts as a point of contact to ensure clients have the appropriate information including file updates, process or procedural changes, Division updates and other general matters
Manages files in the Central Registry filing system, electronic shared directory and in the file/document management databases
Organize all hard copy and electronic files including filing of documents, data entry and the use of the STAR/STOR classification system
Ensures that files/filing is up to date and brought forward for review by lawyers as required
Qualifications and Experience
As our successful candidate, you will possess a certificate/diploma from a Legal Assistant or Paralegal program and 3 years of experience in a legal practice or an acceptable combination of education/training and experience. You have experience and competency in an automated environment, with proficient and accurate typing, dicta typing, MS Word, and data entry skills. You have knowledge of legal terminology, procedures, and documentation, as well as excellent research, analytical and organizational skills. Your excellent communication skills, both written and oral, give you the ability to deal with clients, lawyers and co-workers in a fair, caring, and impartial manner communicating in a clear and concise manner while maintaining confidentiality and impartiality. Assets include:
Knowledge of the various levels of Court
Knowledge of Civil Procedure Rules
Knowledge of provincial government departments and agencies

Interpret contract law as it applies to University policies and regulations related to research.

Position
Come join our close knit, dynamic and growing Wahkohtowin Lodge team working on “the most exciting work on the planet”: the community-led revitalization of Indigenous laws. Our lunch meetings may involve bannock and our team meetings usually include laughter. We are currently looking for a full-time and/or part-time junior lawyer or legal researcher to work on Indigenous community-led research projects. Projects this year include an exciting opportunity to work in partnership with the Indigenous Bar Association on a federal grant from the Department of Justice, to collaborate extensively with First Nations, Inuit, and Metis peoples [Indigenous Peoples], to write and provide a national Indigenous Justice Strategy [IJS] that will serve as a central instrument through which federal departments develop and implement legislative and policy change, and will be used as a resource for Indigenous communities and organizations across Canada for effecting change at a regional and local level.

The Wahkohtowin Law and Governance Lodge [the Wahkohtowin Lodge] is a dedicated Indigenous law research unit based out of the University of Alberta Faculty of Law, with the objective of upholding Indigenous laws through community-directed research and learning. Our goals are to:
Support Indigenous communities’ goals to identify, articulate, and implement their own laws,
Develop, gather, amplify, and transfer wise practices, promising methods and research tools,
Produce useful and accessible public legal education resources.
The Wahkohtowin Lodge responds to the expressed needs of Indigenous communities and organizations and specifically answers the TRC Call to Action #50 [CTA#50], which calls for the creation of Indigenous Law Institutes for the “development, use and understanding of Indigenous laws.”
Position
Come join our close knit, dynamic and growing Wahkohtowin Lodge team working on “the most exciting work on the planet”: the community-led revitalization of Indigenous laws. Our lunch meetings may involve bannock and our team meetings usually include laughter. We are currently looking for a full-time and/or part-time junior lawyer or legal researcher to work on Indigenous community-led research projects. Projects this year include an exciting opportunity to work in partnership with the Indigenous Bar Association on a federal grant from the Department of Justice, to collaborate extensively with First Nations, Inuit, and Metis peoples [Indigenous Peoples], to write and provide a national Indigenous Justice Strategy [IJS] that will serve as a central instrument through which federal departments develop and implement legislative and policy change, and will be used as a resource for Indigenous communities and organizations across Canada for effecting change at a regional and local level.
Duties
Develop project plans, identify required resources and project schedules.
Assist in the preparation of project budget.
Ensure that assigned projects and reports are carried out on time and within budget, and that scope changes are identified and dealt with appropriately.
Provide extensive legal research, written analysis, governance and policy development.
Organize and facilitate workshops, community engagement activities and public legal & governance education presentations for partner communities, organizations, legal professionals and the general public.
Present policies to the Wahkohtowin Lodge team and partner communities & organizations as well as managing the communication and consultation on identified issues or recommendations to various public forums.
Write and support clear language public legal education materials, consultation documents, final published reports and draft or model legislation where applicable.
Minimum Qualifications
In addition to holding a degree in law [LLB or J.D.], candidates should be prepared to demonstrate the following:
Member or ability to be a member of a Canadian Law Society.
1-5 years experience as legal counsel or in a responsible legal researcher role.
Outstanding legal research skills with the ability to manage extensive comparative research (Indigenous, provincial, federal and international).
Must be able and willing to travel.
Ability to lead a collaborative research process that uses Indigenous legal research methods and protocols, quantitative and qualitative data collection methods.
Strong ability to identify policy issues and explain options for how the law should change.
Experience working with and for Indigenous governments, communities and organizations.
Model respectful relationships, meaningful engagement, communication, inclusion and problem-solving skills, including willingness to respectfully consider many points of view.
Ability to work independently and as part of a team that includes administrative staff.
Strong skills as a group-facilitator and public speaker.

The Department of CSM Legal in the Cumming School of Medicine invites applications for a Junior Legal Counsel . This Full-time Fixed Term position is for approximately 18 months (based on length of grant funding), with the possibility of extension.

The legal services group at the Cumming School of Medicine ( CSM Legal) play a key role in supporting researchers by ensuring research is conducted with the required legal agreements in place. The Junior Legal Counsel role reviews and revises contracts under the direction of the Senior Legal Counsel who acts as manager of CSM Legal.
Position Description
Summary of Key Responsibilities (job functions include but are not limited to):
Contract / Agreement Review
Responsible for review of research contracts including data transfer agreements, material transfer agreements, non-disclosure agreements, clinical trial agreements, partnership agreements, grant agreements, amendments, and sub-site agreements
Accountable for the contract content including interpreting content, proposing alternate language, and determining when Senior Legal Counsel need to be consulted
Negotiate contract clauses with external parties (such as academic institutions, government agencies and industry)
Draft contract clauses based on legacy agreements
Independently manage conflict / competing interests of faculty members / external parties
Interpret, revise, and finalize clinical research contracts ensuring all terms are compliant with University and AHS policies
Complete final review for completion ensuring all required forms, attachments, and supporting documents are include before the contract is finalized
Contract / Agreement Process
Independently manage and prioritize own workflow
Meet unit performance targets
Track contract progression and provide feedback to other University departments, government agencies and external parties regarding the status of a contract
Ensure proper certifications are in place
Maintain contract library and revise contract templates as required
Lead the drafting internal guidelines and processes for the management of agreements, as requested by the Senior Legal Counsel
Independently implement guidelines and processes for the management of agreements
Develop and provide onboarding and training to CSM Legal staff
Utilize and update the unit contract management system and other legal databases/spreadsheets to track contract progression
Meet with sponsors and researchers in advance of the submission of the research contract documentation if required
Respond to requests from Researchers and provide information and advice on University policies and administrative processes governing research contracts
Identify and recommend process improvements for contract administration to the or the Senior Legal Counsel
Draft, lead and implement process improvements as required by Senior Legal Counsel
Work as a member of a team in Legal, Research Services to ensure timelines are met and that work produced is accurate and professional
Other
Communicate and exchange information with other University departments, faculty, staff and external parties such as government agencies, and corporate sponsors regarding all aspects of the legal review process
Present on legal review processes at relevant meetings and conference

Position Overview
The Department of CSM Legal in the Cumming School of Medicine invites applications for a Junior Legal Counsel . This Full-time Fixed Term position is for approximately 18 months (based on length of grant funding), with the possibility of extension.

The legal services group at the Cumming School of Medicine ( CSM Legal) play a key role in supporting researchers by ensuring research is conducted with the required legal agreements in place. The Junior Legal Counsel role reviews and revises contracts under the direction of the Senior Legal Counsel who acts as manager of CSM Legal.
Position Description
Summary of Key Responsibilities (job functions include but are not limited to):
Contract / Agreement Review
Responsible for review of research contracts including data transfer agreements, material transfer agreements, non-disclosure agreements, clinical trial agreements, partnership agreements, grant agreements, amendments, and sub-site agreements
Accountable for the contract content including interpreting content, proposing alternate language, and determining when Senior Legal Counsel need to be consulted
Negotiate contract clauses with external parties (such as academic institutions, government agencies and industry)
Draft contract clauses based on legacy agreements
Independently manage conflict / competing interests of faculty members / external parties
Interpret, revise, and finalize clinical research contracts ensuring all terms are compliant with University and AHS policies
Complete final review for completion ensuring all required forms, attachments, and supporting documents are include before the contract is finalized
Contract / Agreement Process
Independently manage and prioritize own workflow
Meet unit performance targets
Track contract progression and provide feedback to other University departments, government agencies and external parties regarding the status of a contract
Ensure proper certifications are in place
Maintain contract library and revise contract templates as required
Lead the drafting internal guidelines and processes for the management of agreements, as requested by the Senior Legal Counsel
Independently implement guidelines and processes for the management of agreements
Develop and provide onboarding and training to CSM Legal staff
Utilize and update the unit contract management system and other legal databases/spreadsheets to track contract progression
Meet with sponsors and researchers in advance of the submission of the research contract documentation if required
Respond to requests from Researchers and provide information and advice on University policies and administrative processes governing research contracts
Identify and recommend process improvements for contract administration to the or the Senior Legal Counsel
Draft, lead and implement process improvements as required by Senior Legal Counsel
Work as a member of a team in Legal, Research Services to ensure timelines are met and that work produced is accurate and professional
Other
Communicate and exchange information with other University departments, faculty, staff and external parties such as government agencies, and corporate sponsors regarding all aspects of the legal review process
Present on legal review processes at relevant meetings and conference
Introduce new investigators to CSM Legal processes and systems
Perform legal research as directed by the Senior Legal Counsel
Manage projects and project teams independently
Qualifications / Requirements:
Law degree is required
Must be a member of the Law Society of Alberta or eligible to apply for enrolment as an active and insured member
Must have at least 2 years of experience working in areas related to contracts
Experience in interpreting legal contracts and relevant policies is required
Demonstrated excellent written and oral communication skills, with the ability to create well-constructed documents that effectively communicate to the intended audience
Demonstrated strong drafting skills is required
Ability to work in a fast-paced environment while producing on-time and high-quality deliverables is required
Excellent attention to detail is required
Strong time management skills are required
Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills are required
Strong and proven ability to lead and participate in process change initiatives is required
Advanced working knowledge of MS Office and SharePoint is required
