Medico-legal Services’ (MLS) core function is to provide members with general medico-legal advice, and assistance in responding to College and hospital matters and legal actions arising from their medical professional work. POSITION OVERVIEW
The Medical-Legal Assistant (MLA) provides high quality administrative support to Physician Advisors in the Medico-legal Services’ (MLS) department. Specifically, the MLA assists the Physician Advisors in the effective and efficient management/monitoring, review and maintenance of medical legal case files and ultimately, in the delivery of core services to CMPA members. The MLA plays a key role in ensuring that CMPA medical legal files and various other types of records are created and/or maintained in an accurate, appropriate and timely fashion. Key activities include transcription, document editing, and electronic document review and management, document analysis and data capture, and outgoing calls to members. Information of a highly confidential and sensitive nature is involved and the work must be performed in a discrete, accurate and efficient manner. The job is performed in a team environment and within the scope of the Association's policies and procedures.
POSITION ACTIVITIES
Provide high-quality administrative support to the Physician Advisors and Senior Physician Advisors
Prioritize case management workload (i.e. transcription, editing, legal correspondence, case file maintenance).
Transcribe and/or edit dictations with medical terminology.
Collaborate with Legal Case Administrators (LCA) on administrative maintenance for all civil legal cases.
Cross-departmental collaboration with on the management of all files.
Manage most correspondence received from members and law firms.
Initiate appropriate letters to provincial counsel regarding changes to key file information.
Contact members, via phone or email, as required or requested by Physician Advisors.
Contribute to special projects and other duties as required (e.g. updating procedures, testing, working groups, etc.)
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
Diploma or certificate program (2-3 years) in a related field such as Office Administration.
4 to 6 years’ experience working in a medical office or similar setting.
Advanced knowledge of medical terminology. Basic knowledge of legal terminology is an asset.
Training and/or work related experience in editing/proof reading
Experience transcribing medical texts via dictaphone or dictation software
Experience working in reception and/or a call centre is an asset
SKILLS AND ABILITIES
Bilingualism in French and English is mandatory.
Advanced editing/proof reading skills.
Ability to quickly and accurately, transcribe and edit medical legal dictations and enter data into a database.
Ability to exercise judgement and handle highly confidential information with discretion.

ABOUT THE TEAM
As a member of PSP Investments’ Legal Affairs department, the incumbent will, under the direction of the Senior Director, Legal Affairs and in collaboration with the other Access to Information and Privacy (“ATIP") professionals, be responsible for activities relating to PSP’s compliance with the Access to Information Act (Canada) and privacy laws and data protection obligations applicable to its operations in Canada, the United States, the United Kingdom and Hong Kong.
ABOUT YOUR ROLE
As an Access to Information and Privacy Counsel, Legal Affairs, you’ll:
Accountable for processing and responding to access to information and privacy requests, investigations, complaints and consultations within delay prescribed by law.
Collaborate with, and obtain alignment from, other PSP teams in the context of ATIP requests, consultations, projects, assessments and investigations
Provide advice and recommendations on disclosure of information in accordance with ATIP Acts, policies and directives.
Support wholly-owned subsidiaries of PSP in the application of applicable ATIP laws.
Review and validate the monthly proactive disclosure reports prior to disclosure in accordance with the Access to Information Act.

Monitor, report on and implement new requirements under applicable and ATIP laws and share relevant information with internal stakeholders.
Draft and update ATIP policies, procedures, guidelines, notices and other documentation.

Develop, compile and maintain KPIs and prepare periodic reports for various internal teams.
Oversee preparation of internal and external ATIP reports.
Develop and maintain networks internally and externally in the ATIP community.

WHAT YOU’LL NEED
Education
Called to the bar in at least one Province in Canada (ideally)
IAPP or other privacy professional certification will be considered an asset
Experience
Minimum of 7+ years related experience within Access to Information, preferably in a government institution

JOB SUMMARY

As the preferred candidate, you have over Five years specialty lines litigation experience.
You bring strong research skills, and the ability to multi-task and meet tight deadlines. You are highly organized with strong attention to detail and can handle litigation files with minimal supervision.
Responsibilities
Provide legal counsel to clients by analyzing their situation, defining their needs, and determining a proper strategy and course of action
Handle legal matters in: municipal liability, police liability, occupier's liability, liquor liability, property insurance, and product liability
Prepare legal documents, such as correspondence, motions, pleadings, briefs, and claims on behalf of the client
Mediate, negotiate, arbitrate, litigate, and argue motions on behalf of clients during legal proceedings in court
Supervise tasks assigned to administrative staff and paralegals and work with clerks to set up client billing, meetings, and wrap up of case projects
