The Opportunity
The Director, Legal Services will provide strong leadership and expert legal advisory services on a broad range of organizational matters including licensee conduct, licensing, and practice; regulatory frameworks; contracts; and other matters as required. Duties and Responsibilities

Oversee the drafting and circulation of intended decisions and orders.

Manage the organization’s participation in Financial Services Tribunal appeals and judicial reviews.
Prepare, review, and provide legal analysis of proposed policies, guidelines, rules, and legislation.
Act as the organization’s Privacy Officer and oversee compliance with FOIPPA including the organization’s responses to FOI requests.
Conduct legal research and gather information and data from various sources.
Manage engagement of external legal counsel as required.

Delivering commercial legal advice and services across Corporate Legal, with a primary focus on Global Operations and supply chain agreements to support new product launches and increased commercial demand.
Giving guidance on complex and high value global contracts, including supporting negotiations and contract drafting.
Advising on and negotiating a wide range of contracts, disputes, and contract interpretation, adopting a pragmatic and risk based approach to contracting.
Providing strategic advice to senior stakeholders, including SET / SET-1.
Counsel on corporate transactions, which might include licensing arrangements, collaboration agreements, acquisitions, and divestments.
Proactively driving contract capability uplift across Global Operations and Global Procurement Services, including training, guidance and implementing standard processes relating to contracts and negotiations.
Collaborating with the Global Legal group, including the intellectual property group, ensuring a consistent approach to contracting and mitigating legal risks to ensure a seamless service to stakeholders.
Supporting the delivery of appropriate level of service from external counsel, including aggressively managing costs on matters for which external counsel is retained.
Handling special projects, for example, to increase efficiencies.
Essential Skills/Experience:
Bachelor of Laws (LL.B.) or a Juris Doctor (J.D.)
Member in good standing with the Law Society of Ontario (must retain status)
5+ years of legal practice experience, particularly in commercial law and manufacturing and supply chain agreements
Experience and comfort advising on US contracts
Experience working in a global legal environment
Excellent interpersonal and communication skills to explain complex legal issues in an easy to understand manner
Business oriented and pragmatic approach to problem solving
Skill in analyzing and solving issues related to a wide variety of substantive legal areas
Preferred Skills/Experience:
Pharmaceutical or other regulated industry experience highly desirable
Experience working with the following:
in-house in a multinational company

About the role
We’re looking for an In-House Legal Counsel II to join our growing team! What you’ll do here:
Handle insurance defence files of varying complexities independently from beginning to conclusion.
Independently prepare and conduct applications/motions, discoveries, mediations, arbitration, pre-trial conferences and trials.
Draft opinions, pleadings, affidavits and other legal documents to support motion applications, mediation briefs and pre-trial memoranda.
Prepare and present legal educational seminars to the claims department.
Maintain productive and effective communications with the claims department and adjusters.
What you bring to the table:
Law Degree (LLB or JD) from accredited Canadian university or equivalent.
Minimum of five to seven years of insurance litigation experience.
Expertise in drafting pleadings, reviewing and assessing voluminous production, conducting discoveries, and trials/arbitration.
Superior organizational skills, including the ability to handle multiple case files simultaneously and independently.
Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to build effective client relationships.
Excellent verbal and written communication skills combined with research and negotiating experience.
Proficient in alternative dispute resolution including independent preparation and conduct of mediations.
