Contract Lawyer (In House Counsel) Solicitor

Job Description

Position:                            Legal Counsel (Health) – Temporary Full Time – 14 Month Contract         

Dept/Health System:     Legal Services




Trillium Health Partners is seeking a strategic and results-oriented lawyer to join its Legal Services Team. Aligned with the Hospital’s strategic direction, the candidate will provide a full spectrum of legal services across the organization with an emphasis on health law services, enabling the delivery of outstanding health care to the community.


The ideal candidate will have at least 5 years of legal experience focused on health law, gained at a leading law firm or health law department. Strong experience with the public hospital regulatory regime, privacy legislation, regulated professional colleges and professional staff privileges will be an asset. Familiarity with procurement laws for not-for-profit entities will also be an asset.


The candidate will report directly to and support the accountabilities of the General Counsel and will have the opportunity to do the following.




  • Provides organization-wide legal advice and information pertaining to risk management, medical/legal concerns, mental health issues, consent and capacity matters, complex continuing care, privacy matters, release of information, by-laws and policies.
  • Reviews and negotiates third party contracts, opinions and other legal documents.
  • Ensures corporate compliance with applicable local, provincial and federal laws governing the organization’s operations.
  • Supports the rollout of the regulatory changes that are occurring in the healthcare sector.
  • Supports minimizing and managing legal and statutory risks.



Knowledge, Experience and Skills


  • Membership in good standing in the Law Society of Upper Canada
  • At least 5 years of health law and public hospital regulatory experience
  • An understanding of procurement laws for not-for-profit entities is an asset
  • High level of composure with the ability to demonstrate sound judgment, discretion, tact and courtesy, with the ability to manage a demanding practice, work under pressure and maintain strict confidentiality
  • Excellent written and verbal communication and presentation skills
  • Results-oriented and client-focused with a commitment to excellence
  • Strong conceptual skills; systems thinking and ability to deal with ambiguity
  • Superior analytical, problem solving, negotiation and conflict resolution skills
  • Ability to build effective working relationships with a dynamic, professional team


Position Location and Travel:

Travel among the 3 main sites of Trillium Health Partners will be required.
