You have:
Professional degree in Law (JD, L.L.B or equivalent) with membership in good standing in the Law Society of Ontario
At least 6 years demonstrated progressively responsible related legal experience
Familiarity with property assessment terminology, the Assessment Review Board Rules of Practice and Procedure, MPAC policies and procedures, valuation theory, appraisal methodologies, and related legislation such as the Assessment Act, City of Toronto Act, Municipal Act, Municipal Freedom of Information Protection of Privacy Act and the MPAC Act

What you will do:
Support the VP & General Counsel on overall department strategy, key performance indicators and work collaboratively with management to achieve strategic objectives
Represent MPAC in assessment appeals, appeals to Divisional Court, tax exemption applications, and in general litigation matters
Work with and provide support to Assessment Advocacy and Legislative Interpretation and Litigation Strategy (LILS) in responding to legal interpretation requests, general legal enquiries, assessment appeals to the ARB
Provide leadership in the development of policy and procedures governing the provision of legislation and policy support services to municipalities, municipal associations, property taxpayers and professional associations and other jurisdictions
Provide assessment policy advice and legislative interpretation services to MPAC staff to ensure MPAC’s compliance with the Assessment Act, MPAC Act and other relevant Acts;
Work with the Director, Assessment Litigation and Dispute Resolution, and the Director, Legislative Interpretation and Litigation Strategy to oversee all assessment-related litigation at the ARB
Approve the use of external counsel, including selecting, retaining and negotiating services, as required
Liaise with the Ministry of Finance, ARB, property tax agents and lawyers, rate payers on an ongoing basis, managing relationships as a representative of MPAC; advocate for legislative and regulatory change

What you’ll bring

What you’ll bring

Reviews claims related to labour relations and employment matters, assesses exposure to liability, and in consultation with the General Counsel makes recommendations to the Faculty Relations portfolio and/or the AVP (HRHSE) portfolio and/or senior management on how cases should be handled, including assigning to outside counsel when appropriate.
Draft and review a wide range of agreements including employment contracts, severance agreements and settlement agreements. This would include the creation of template agreements where appropriate.
Provide support during the collective bargaining process.
Provide interpretation of relevant University policies and legislation.
To be successful in this position, the incumbent will possess the following skills and experience:
Law Degree and Member of Law Society of Alberta (or immediately eligible to be a member).
Minimum 5 years of labour and employment practice in a law firm or in a corporate or institutional environment with a track record of success. Experience in the post-secondary or public sector would be a clear asset.
Knowledge and experience with applicable legislation including the Alberta Labour Relations Code, Employment Standards Code, OHS, WCB and the Alberta Human Rights Act.

Education & Experience
Member in good standing with the Canadian Bar
Licensed to practice law in Canada
Minimum 5 -7 years of prior proven experience with major law firm and/or corporation
Experience with and knowledge of the Canadian employment law and legislative requirements
Experience with and knowledge of immigration law relevant in employment context

The Opportunity
Our Litigation team in Canada is looking to add a junior lawyer to the team. Reporting to the Director, Litigation & Employment Law, this professional will support the team in both conducting and managing litigation and arbitration matters involving TC Energy and its subsidiaries. We are seeking a dynamic Legal Counsel who has knowledge and experience in commercial litigation and arbitration matters. This individual has the proven skills, competencies and capacity to support the litigation and arbitration process, identify legal risks and provide strategic legal advice tailored to the needs of the business unit.
What you’ll do
This Legal Counsel will support the full cycle of the litigation or arbitration process, starting with initial file assessment and fact gathering, through the pleadings, discovery, trial and/or settlement phases. Specific tasks include:
Conducting initial file assessment and review, including interviewing witnesses and fact- gathering
Conducting legal research and preparing research memorandums
Assisting with document identification, collection, review and production
Drafting legal memorandums, pleadings, applications and briefs
Assisting with or conducting questioning
Assisting with trials or hearings; and,
Drafting settlement agreements and releases.
Minimum Qualifications
2-4 years’ experience in litigation
LL.B, J.D. or equivalent from a recognized University
Active member in good standing of the Law Society of Alberta
Preferred Qualifications
Excellent legal research, writing, and analytical skills
Experience with complex commercial, construction, and employment disputes, and bankruptcy and insolvency matters
Proven ability to manage multiple competing priorities within tight timeframes
Flexible, with strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work independently and as part of a team in a dynamic, constantly changing environment
Solid judgment and demonstrated analytical and problem-solving capabilities
Experience with LawBase Matter Management, Open Text, Axcelerate Review & Analysis and, Legal Hold Pro, or other similar systems
This position requires candidates to:
Have current, valid authorization to work in Canada
Have current, valid authorization to travel internationally (including but not limited to Canada, US and Mexico)
Be part of an on-call rotation as Legal representative in Corporate Emergency Operations Centre and provide emergency support as required
Successfully complete pre-employment Bankruptcy, Credit, Civil and Criminal background checks
