About the role   It takes a whole team of dedicated lawyers working behind the scenes to help Shopify create a platform that makes commerce better for everyone.  Lawyers on our team must be able to apply their knowledge and experience to novel scenarios to provide the best advice possible in a way that allows Shopify’s business to stay agile and competitive. Every person on our team is committed to making commerce better for everyone, and it truly shows. In this role, you will report to our Director, Associate General Counsel, Payments and Financial Services, supporting the Shopify Financial Solutions (Money) Product line. The Money team is responsible for all systems that move money between Shopify, our merchants and their buyers, and Shopify Partners. This includes payment processing, billing, capital advances, account balances and evaluating risk.  Money matters. A lot. This role will have you providing legal support in areas that are absolutely critical to the success of every participant in the Shopify ecosystem. About You To succeed in this position you will need solid technical skills, communication skills, the ability to collaborate and work well with others, common sense and grit -- all of which provide you with the ability to extrapolate into new areas of law or new geographies using a combination of your existing knowledge, great instincts, and strong research skills. You are able to synthesize and analyze volumes of information from a variety of sources, spot issues, and efficiently and determinatively come to a business-focused, workable solution that mitigates risk on a tight timeline with limited resources and multiple stakeholders. You’re able to implement your solution and manage it over the long-term. You can quickly re-calibrate, iterate or pivot when faced with new information or changing circumstances. Success on the Shopify legal team more broadly requires intellect, passion, hard work, humility and a sense of humour. You need to take the work seriously, but not take yourself too seriously. You also need to be comfortable with being uncomfortable, able to work with many different types of personalities, really connect with people, and enjoy working as a team player.   A few things you will need: A J.D. or LL.B; Exposure to (and deep interest in!) payments, fintech, financial services and/or banking; Strong legal and interpersonal skills from private practice and/or in-house experience coupled with a focus on regulatory and policy work and a deep desire to learn; History working with cross functional teams from engineering to finance to sales and beyond; Experience providing legal counsel on new product developments, including drafting terms of service and associated policies; Experience leading projects and managing multiple priorities, stakeholders and deadlines; Experience managing external legal counsel, including in international jurisdictions. If you have any other legal super powers or relevant non-legal super powers, tell us about them in your cover letter! Please address your cover letter to Jodi Golinsky, Associate General Counsel.  She’s looking forward to reading your application and finding someone amazing to join her team   Job post summary Location Ottawa Specialty Legal and Finance If your experience is this close to what we’re looking for, please consider applying.
