Legal Counsel ALBERTA ELECTRIC SYSTEM OPERATOR Calgary, AB, CANADA The Alberta Electric System Operator is responsible for the safe, reliable, and economic planning and operation of the Alberta Interconnected Electric System. We provide open and non-discriminatory access to Alberta’s interconnected power grid and also facilitate Alberta’s competitive wholesale electricity market which, in 2016, had 188 participants and approximately $2 Billion in annual energy transactions. This position reports to the AESO’s General Counsel and works under the direction of General Counsel. As a member of the AESO’s legal team, legal counsel works on a wide variety of matters, with responsibility for all legal matters of certain AESO departments. Examples of responsibilities include: Provide legal services to AESO departments. Provide oral and written advice to internal clients. Provide support to General Counsel. Participate as a team member to deliver on strategic business initiatives. Advise internal clients with respect to commercial and operational agreements, including agreements regarding information technology and understand and align skills and knowledge with internal clients legal/business needs. To thrive in this position, proven analytical and communication skills and the ability to thrive in a dynamic work environment are required. A team oriented attitude, excellent judgment and decision making skills are also important for success. This position requires extensive internal client contact. Accountabilities: Provide full suite of legal commercial services, including without limitation, drafting, negotiating, delivering solid legal advice and opinions on issues facing AESO. Demonstrate a high degree of professional ethics and integrity. Review, draft and negotiate a variety of contracts and other legal documents. Develop and maintain professional relationships with internal clients and external stakeholders as required. Maintain currency with, and provide advice and interpretation of relevant legislations. Identify legal compliance requirements and proactively ensure that these are implemented. Research and prepare legal opinions. Apply effective risk management techniques and offer other proactive advice on possible legal issues. Develop and understanding of the AESO’s business and awareness of stakeholder relations. Education / Degree / Certification: LL.B. /J.D., full membership in the Law Society of Alberta or eligible for full membership. Job Experience: 5-10 years’ experience in addressing legal issues associated with commercial management, including procurement and dispute resolution matters.
