About the Role The Corus Entertainment Law Department provides legal advice and services on commercial matters arising out of Corus’ various businesses. We currently have an opening for a lawyer to join our team in Toronto as Legal Counsel for a nine month contract position reporting to the Vice President and Associate General Counsel, Content. Most of the work will be in respect of Corus’ Animation studio, Nelvana, and its book publishing business, Kids Can Press. RESPONSIBILITIES Drafting and negotiating all manner of commercial agreements relating to the production of television programs and publication of books; Errors and Omissions compliance, including script clearances, and reviewing copyright and title reports; advising on various legal issues in production of animation and live action programs, and publication of kids and young-adult books; and day-to-day supervision of contract managers in their duties (which include drafting and negotiating television production and book publishing agreements). Knowledge/Credentials Essential: Lawyer in good standing with the Law Society of Ontario; a minimum of 3 years of experience in private practice or the legal or business affairs team of a television production company or broadcaster with deep experience in drafting and negotiating of all manner of television production agreements (both above-the-line and below-the-line); and experience with Errors and Omissions compliance, including with respect to script review and clearance. Asset (not required subject to an enthusiastic willingness and commitment to learn the following): Previous work experience, legal or otherwise, in animation or book publishing; in-depth knowledge of complex underlying rights arrangements; and exposure to news programming and related legal issues. REQUIRED SKILLS: Excellent drafting and negotiating skills; strong analytical and problem solving skills; attention to detail and high level of accuracy; an ability to work under pressure and meet deadlines; strong work ethic and a “can do” attitude; strong leadership, organizational and interpersonal skills; and excellent communication skills, and comfort communicating with employees at all levels of the organization.
