This incumbent of this new role will provide legal advice and opinions on a diverse range of legal matters with a particular focus on commercial contract interpretation and administration, claims management, human resources and safety issues, risk avoidance strategies, competition concerns, statutory and regulatory matters, and M&A transactions. The successful applicant will work closely with the Canadian leadership team to identify and eliminate/mitigate legal risk to the organization. Thorough knowledge and experience in writing and interpreting complex commercial contracts is critical, as is a broad understanding of a diverse range of legal practice areas. The successful applicant will be responsible to build strong relationships with internal colleagues across the country, and interact equally effectively with client representatives in order to explore, prevent or resolve legal issues. Experience in discovery and litigation processes is also essential. The successful candidate will possess a Bachelor of Law degree (LLB) and good standing with the applicable provincial law society, as well as at least eight years of experience working as in-house counsel in a highly demanding industrial or construction environment. The ideal candidate is highly organized with the ability to manage multiple projects and priorities concurrently and within tight deadlines, has strong negotiation, interpersonal and oral/written communication skills, and can easily translate legal concepts into readily understandable advice. The ability to provide timely responses and build trust with a broad network of professional colleagues and team members is particularly critical within this service-oriented organization.
